Thanks for the information, a friend of mine bought a second hand Defender with remapped engine (probably BAS, currently waiting to get the reading/writing OBD-II interface from the previos owner) and he was fairly sure that sometime (he said two times in about 100 engine switch off) the EGR did the chukka-chukka.

Can't say I've heard the EGR self-cleaning in over 2 years of my BAS remap --

Without the EGR disabled the chukka-chukka happened every engine-off. You can decide when you buy your remap whether you want the EGR to be disabled or not |

Out of interest guys, what's the downside to disabling the EGR?

One side effect in disabling the EGR is Exhaust Gas Temperature increase, but I think that only remapped engine without larger intercooler could lead to exhaust manifold warping due to overheat.

I'm not an expert but I think you are incorrect MD5. With the EGR closed exhaust gases exit via the exhaust. WITH the EGR valve operational then hot exhaust gases will be recirculated to the inlet side

With EGR open, gas are recirculated but there are a cool down process and more important the gas are inert and allow a combustion at lower temperature than using only fresh (not recirculated) air. |

I think all of the forum sponsors that offer tuning services can turn off the EGR valve. Alive Tuning, BAS, IRB, etc. Darren
