Electric current where it should not be
When my side/main lights are turned on it crerates a 9v current in the rear brake light wire.
This causes the LED rear brake lights to come on all the time that the side lights are on.
This is not a problem if I had old style bulbs in the circuit as they will not operate at 9v, but the LEDs will come on at this voltage.
I guess that I have water in the wiring some where that is joining the side and brake circuits together - but where?
If the brakes are on (12v in their wire) it does not cause any voltage in the side light wire if the side lights are turned off. So the problem only occurs one way from side to brake , so I do not think it is a direct wire connection.
Is there any anything I can do to solve this or to investigate further ?

At present my options are - replace loom - dont fancy doing this
Run one LED and one Bulb back light - also dont fancy doing this

Any advice appreciated as I am confused

Unfortunately there is no 'quick fix' without fault finding.

Purchase yourself a cheap insulation tester/multimeter and then use the principle of 'split by half method' to find your fault.

Split by half fault finding......

Split half technique is used when fault finding on an electrical circuit. If you have a supply and an earth, you would then check for voltage about half way along the circuit. If you had voltage, you would then pick a point about half way between your present position and earth. You would then repeat with half way of every subsequent half until you had located the fault.

Or if you don't have the inclination 'slave' cable(s) in from the relay to the lights until you find the damaged cable. The slaved in cables need only run for diagnostic purposes from a suitable point (relay is favourite) to the light and does not have to be routed in but can be run outside the vehicle until such time as you diagnose the affected cable(s), then replace as necessary. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Do you have a tow pack fitted ? as the 7/13 pin sockets fill up with water from the back wheels and cause alsorts of problems If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Thanks noworries I will check the towing electrics first - I did drive through a puddle 3 feet deep so lots water everywhere
If not I will try the split by half method

Ahhh WD40 on standby then, wash the plug out with it. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

I had this problem last year in damp weather i think the bulbs were arcing to earth it went away in the dry weather Thumbs Up

Just stripped the tow socket and problem cured - Thankyou noworries4x4
Now I need to find a waterproof 7 pin socket

The genuine Land Rover part is a sealed unit (filled with some sort of resin), so no chance of water causing this problem.
