Ireland 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 CSW Stornoway Grey
On a forum like this one its fair to say that most of us maintain our vehicles above and beyond minimum safety parameters.

But in order to ensure most road users who aren't as fastidious as us comply with a basic legal safety regime the MOT test, albeit with its imperfections, represents the only practicable 'one size fits all' mandatory test that at least gives a certain standard to which all vehicles must legally adhere.

I am always annoyed when I hear people bragging about eg their tyres being worn nearly down to the cords when they were changed. Ha Ha yeah. Its not funny if you then crash into my missus and kids on a bend in the rain when - to save a few quid- you're running on slicks.

The MOT equivalent in Ireland (NCT) is required only every two years but boy is it strict. I couldn't believe it when my Peugeot failed due to 1) a crack on the windscreen which was hidden by the tax disc anyway and 2) the split pins on the track rod ends broken because the lazy bar steward main Peugeot dealers snapped them and didn't replace them when I had new wishbones a couple of years ago (a horse jumped over a hedge into my path - insurance repair). But I was pleased that the test was that thorough because in general IMHO it decreases the number of accidents caused by careless selfish scumbags who have no regard for safety.
