2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 CSW Alpine White
stuck in first gear!
Put it in neutral to start it up but it jerked forward as I turned the starter. It is stuck in first, even though the gear lever is in neutral position. Clutch and transfer box working normally. Gear stick is not broken. Any ideas?
Thanks. David

I had this problem on the one at work. Only done 18k & its a 07 plate

I ended up taking the gearbox out & sending it off.

It came back & they said a selector had got stuck between 1st & Reverse.

They took it apart & checked everything & put it back together & its been fine since Thumbs Up

Put a clutch in it too as the springs looked like they were going fall out Shocked

Sounds to me you have got the same problem Big Cry Chris

This can be fixed in the car,

At the rear left corner of the gearbox you will see 2 detent plugs, one vertical and one horizontal,

Using a small chisel, tap out the vertical one, it has a mushroom head to hit on and is an interference fit,

Once out, poke a small screwdriver into the hole and lever the selector rail to the front of the car about 5mm,

Have a front wheel up and keep rocking it so you know when you are back in neutral,

Then either put the depend back in or better still replace it with the later one which has a stronger spring, will post the part number tomorrow,

This is interesting. Wished we had known this before we took box out & we would have tried Evil or Very Mad

But still the clutch was faulty

You never know it may happen to my puma next Chris

Hi ash trans I've had a problem where the defender is stuck in first....ive read a few threads and solved the problem, the car is no longer stuck,it is selecting all gears ok.
Is there a part number for the replacement detent plugs are they tapped in with a hammer? as there is no thread?
also is there any other parts which can be fitted while apart?Which lube shall i use on all moving parts thanks and regards Bill.

This has just happened to me - stuck in first gear. Puma 2011.

Does anyone have a photo of the detent plug I need to remove?

I have removed the gearsticks/gaiters and pulled up the plastic tunnel housing to expose the back top and left side of the gearbox (btw, do you need to remove the handbrake lever to take the housing off completely?) - but I don't see anything with a mushroom head that looks like it could be removed with a chisel.

The later ones have no mushroom head, they are black and knock in flush, to remove you have to drill and use a slide hammer Dave

That bulletin has me thinking... are these sort of things only applicable (ie free) during the warranty period and is there a way of finding out if your car has had all the recalls and such like?

Oh that is a pity.

If I have to drill, do you know what the replacement part number is?

In the meantime I will need to go and find a slide hammer.

Many thanks

Thanks for the help. I had to dig through the snow to get to the Defender this morning..not the best time to be working outside..

I'm not sure how thick the detent plugs are, but I am guessing I probably won't be able to re-use after drilling, so I see there is a special tool that means no drilling and hopefully also able to re-use the plug. This is the tool:https://jlrequipment.service-solutions.com...mVID=47649

BUT I don't seem to be able to buy from that site. To register you need to be a registered business. Does anyone know where I can get these special tools?

Thanks.

I had this problem a couple of years ago, a guy from the dealership came out wrestled with the gear lever for a couple of minutes and sorted it, not had the problem since, that was 25k miles ago,....

I didn't have the tools to fix this and it was cold with plenty of snow - so the decision to take to a local garage was easy, because I thought it would be a quick job. Well, that was 5 weeks ago and I still don't have it back!

They couldn't get it out of gear with the gearbox in place, so they took it out, opened it up and freed it (not sure exactly what they did). They refitted the gearbox, put it in reverse to drive off the ramp and then after 5 metres the gear was completely blocked again. So they have taken it out again and will open it up tomorrow, but I think they are a bit confused as how to fix. It is an independent garage with a fair bit of Defender and other 4x4 experience, although I think mostly pre-Puma. They described my gearbox as a 'gadget' and suggested I trade it in for an older defender. I am hoping there is a simpler way to fix!

Does anyone have any suggestions of tips that could help point the garage in the right direction please?
