You should be using both for combi with radiators, different setup for underfloor heating.
Set TRV's half way, room stat at about 19 / 20 degrees and the timer for about 3+ hours in the morning and 5+ at night depending on weather seasons. During periods of prolonged cold spells I have run the heating 24/7 with room stat set at 20 degrees. This gives best economy with adequate heating. We run a number of houses and use this setup to achieve best heating at acceptable costs. 2007 TD5 90 Hard Top |

Likewise, i've never used the timer, our heating is 'on' constant .... we just turn the stat down to 17-18 overnight and when out at work, and set it to 20-22 when home/weekends.
Happy with my bills, cheaper than next doors Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

Depends on construction, insulation of the property.
Most uk properties are not built/insulted good enough to retain heat, so a timed thermostat controlled system is normally best. Andy |

I have been told by various heating engineers that you should turn the water temp right up to max and then use both room/radiator stats and a main central control stat set to 20deg. 1hr on before you get up for 2hrs and then all evening while you are home and 24hrs over the weekend. Do not turn system off if away for a long weekend as takes to long to heat the house up again might as well have just left it set as above. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

I assume when you say 'turn the water temp up to max', you are talking about the boiler stat not the water as in the DHW? As this would be dangerous due to scalding and also cause excessive scale in most systems.

CH 24/7 with rads turned off in Rooms with Log Burners inc Hall way as latent heat from the burners keeps the hall tosty |

The house is a 3 bed semi 1975 MY. Cavity insulation, loft insulation (loft has Upvc facias with vents all round to allow it to breathe) Windows all UPVc The rads are a selection probably of the older type, single panel single convection, double panel single convection and one rad double panel double convection. Sounds Like my set up, timer on the boiler and thermostat in the lounge that overrides the timer set at 20c heating comes on 30mins before I get up and switchs off 30mins before I go out, and comes on 30 mins before I plan to get home and goes off at my usual bed time, I also have thermostatic valves in all rooms except the lounge all set at 3 so no individual rooms get hot, all my rads are acova (old school tube type) and wow to they throw out some heat, bill for a 3 bed 1960s semi is about £750pa with British Gas DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Bloody hell you lot. I live in a 3 bed terrace house in Brizzle. Centre of 3 houses so not a small typical terrace house. Cavity wall down front and back, 12" of insulation in the loft, new double glazing last year all round. I have an 8KW log burner in living room. Over the last 3 bills, given 3 monthly my bill has averaged 13 quid a 1/4!!!!!
We turn the CH on twice through the winter to stretch it's legs. Woodburner is running most nights and warms the whole house through. The only other gas powered appliance in the house is the hob for cooking. I couldn't cope with paying 40quid + every month for gas!!!! Wood is free but I have to drive best part of 200 miles to get it so I reckon 2 1/2 ton costs me 80 quid. Plus if the tree surgeon I get it from is working in my area I get the nod and collect direct from site. 3 bed bungalow we dont spend that much for our dual fuel from British Gas. And then we get a load back for selling them our solar power. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. I'm in the "lucky" position of living in an 18th century terraced house. Single-glazed all round, and no insulation whatsoever. Suffice to say the heat gets out pretty easy! Oil-fired heating as well. There's an open fire too which is a bonus I guess. No idea what my bill will be, but I would imagine it'll be the wrong side of £500 to re-fill the tank in the spring
Looking forward to moving to a more modern property in the future, with insulation and double glazing and mains gas. Added benefit of a gas hob, can't stand these damn electric ones |
