forgive my ignorance but how do auto dimming mirrors work? Embarassed

is it electro photo sensitive or something else?

I think it's along the same lines as auto-dimming welding masks. They use an ultra-fast light sensor to polarise an LCD (obviously a plain one without digits and stuff on it, and no rear reflector), which is placed in front of the regular mirrored surface.

When light is detected, the LCD is polarised dark, which stops light getting through to the main mirror, and blinding you.

Me too. I looked at this a year ago or so, as I had one kicking about from an Audi A3, but came to the same conclusion!
