CD's skipping when I turn up the volume...why?
I have a recent CD/iPod compatible Kenwood head-unit installed and connected up to a new Alpine sub (with built in amp). It all works fine except that when I turn the volume up to a decent level the CD starts to skip as if it's scratched. Turn it back down and its fine again. When I listen to the radio or iPod at any volume it's fine.

Any ideas why? Is the Kenwood not up to the job ? Earth not good enough on the sub? Cheers,
Superspoons

Transport is fudged, take the head unit back.

It's about 2 years old now (used to be in my TD5)... looks like a good excuse to get a new unit Smile Cheers. Cheers,

If it was bass vibration then the CD would skip when driving over a rough surface too. If it doesn't it's not that. Try it without the sub and see if it does then or not if it still does it'll likely be the HU laser misreading or something electronic malfunctioning inside. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

My home system kicks out enough bass to shake the front door and the CD player just chugs along fine, it ought to be able to handle some bass (imagine the demonstrator cars at JBL etc, they'd be fudged if the CD player couldn't handle a bit of bass).

My Smart had a skipping problem with the CD player, I took it back and they replaced the transport.

What is that exactly?

I also never use CD's in mine only iPod / radio because CD's and Defenders don't mix very well IMHO. Especially with the state of the roads. Rolling Eyes Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

I would recommend it. Then again I am biased. Whistle You'll also be able to have green illumination too that will match the dash.

A CD transport is the actual mechanism that holds the CD and laser in position while the magic is happening, the guts of the system if you like. If it's skipping then we can assume the laser is loosing position on the CD by either the laser loosing it's tracking position or the CD moving, either way it's the transport that's to blame.

When you get into it, you'll find a lot of systems from different manufacturers us the same CD transport but add their own electronics to it to produce their own sound.

This isn't one of those head units where you can set the peak voltage level for the sub output, or the impedance match with a switch on the back is it? If it is, you may be driving it too hard and causing HU PSU output voltage to partially collapse, hence upsetting the CD transport.

This may also be configurable in one of the settings menus.

I've been through the settings and switched the Sub off via the menu on the unit - a Kenwood KDC-4547U - still skips through the CD when the volume is turned up. Can't find anything on the unit or in the manual to switch off / do.... Think it's a trip to Halfrauds/Eblag for me Sad

Manual is here if anyone can point me to a feature... -

Can't see anything that would cause it in the manual. I would exchange it as it shouldn't do it. Regardless of where purchased from would record a video / sound recording of the actual CD skipping happening too. That way you have back up proof to show that it is doing what it has been. otherwise they might just try and fob you off and say the volume is probably too high. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Cheers for taking the time to look Steve. I'll try and find the receipt from Halfords and pop it back...I think it's a good 2+ years old now though...not sure how receptive they will be. Cheers,
