I would hazard a guess a new HU will be going in there at the very least seeing as I have spotted a single DIN radio cage there.

Kris, have you routed the heated mirror cables down inside the 'spring', if so, how ?????

Hi Matt,
As you can see in the photo, the cable comes up into the bottom of the body, through an enlarged hole in the plastic cap. It then runs up through the body where the spring is located and a hole has been drilled from the underside of the arm through into the body. I had to drill this on a bit of an angle due to access for the drill, but it works fine and is totally invisible unless you look up from underneath. The body of the unit still rotates once the hole had been drilled. I popped the plastic cap off the top so I could get an edge in the body from the top to encourage the cable through the hole that had been drilled, the plastic cap needed securing with just a drop of sikaflex once it had been removed. Then you also need to drill out the shaft that the mirror sits on so the cable runs under the arm and up through the middle. Does that make sense??? The only wiring that is visible is that small bit where it comes out of the car and into the bottom of the spring body, though with a bit more fabrication / drilling that could also probably be avoided. Basically I copied Jake here but looks like those images are now offline... |

Thanks Kris,
All makes sense except the hole at the top, I've got one infront of me, do you end up drilling through the tube surrounded by the spring and through the spring or does the spring stop short of the top .... approx how far down the tube from the top do you think your hole came through ? Cheers Matt |

I drilled all the way through so the hole started under the U section of the 'arm'. and ended up in the open gap in the middle of the body so went through the casting, spring and the sleeve on the inside.
Im not sure how high up the spring goes, but either it stops short of the top or the drill found a path through the windings. I guess the hole on the inside was probably about an inch or so down from the top but hard to remember now as I did it as one of the first jobs. I'll be home tonight and can try taking a couple of photos if that would help? |
