I am also heading up to the frozen north in January, our preps seem very alike, except i'll be in a 90 and in a text with heater. -40 comfort rated bags with -40 sleeping mats underneath them and reindeer skins as well. Should be toasty!

Let me know how the trip goes, should be fun!

Mark

Hi Mark,

It was not taken with any offence, I am happy for any advise or experience. Two of our group will be sleeping in tents with the other two myself included will be sleeping in our trucks.

The sleeping in the truck decision came after I had started to build my rear storage unit, and then decided to go to Norway one thing lead to another and the storage unit was extended to include a sleeping platform.

Jason.

Thanks for all the input, I hate to say it, but I can see why the mrs wants a van, much more room. Will try my next approach, a roof tent on the 90 for the odd night, until we get to said camp site. So, any pictures of camping equiped 90's plus roof tents. Hell, will we get all the gear in I think.....

Peterl - it really depends on what time of year and where you will be going ... there's a few on the forum with vans, equally a bunch with tents, clam-shell tents, fold-out roof tents etc etc....

I believe there is a T@B 4x4 caravan for sale on the forum at the moment too ....

to a point whether a tent or a van, they are all a compromise in one way or another you just need to work on what you are happiest to compromise on Thumbs Up

I have tried all types of tents Howling Moon roof tent / Howling Moon trailer tent / Oz tent and everything in between, spent 5 weeks camping in Europe last summer and it seemed the rain just followed us . Got so pee'd off packing wet tents away so when we got home sold the lot and have now taken delivery of a new 180Dsg 4Motion Transporter.
It's in the process of being converted into a camper ready for another trip to Europe next year Very Happy

Thats the way it looks we will be going. Test driving vw transporter and vito next week, but i still fancy a 90 or d3 as well, but can't have both, a hard long think is required.
Have you still got the d3 or has it gone.
Catch up with you soon

Pete

Hi Pete
It was a difficult decision but it suits our needs better and is far better for the many trips we do Very Happy I have just this week taken the D3 up to my mates garage (B.G Landrovers) for it to be sold Thumbs Up

Hi Sonic

Are you still playing with your Cam Am in the rough stuff, hence no need for a Landy?

Hi Mark
Yes still enjoying the Can Am Thumbs Up this year I entered the Tuareg Rallye in Morocco along with Andy from AJS Tyres also did the Dresden Breslau again and I'm off next week to enter the Raid Bleu in France. The van will just be a tow car and base camp Thumbs Up

Am I right in thinking that if you fold away a wet roof tent then it's going to wick through to the bedding?

Supacat, I've never really had that problem, and I've packed away a few wet roof tents!

Sonic, I've just chopped the D4 in for a new vw California. Get it in March next year! Defender stays though!

Hi Ian you won't regret your choice Thumbs Up I don't need the Defender or Disco as I use the Can Am for my off road fun and not have to worry about getting home if it breaks Very Happy have you gone for 4Motion and Dsg?? And what colour?

Wise words Sonic. What's the VW like for rear space was thinking of down sizing from a 4x4 LWB sprinter to a LWB transporter. Who is doing your conversion?.

The best advice I can give you is to go and have a look at one as a LWB sprinter is a huge van compared to the T5 Shocked Had the pop up roof fitted a couple of weeks ago and the inside is being converted in Nov by Celtic Motorhomes Thumbs Up
