I had mine done some sixteen years ago, when it wasn't done by keyhole surgery. I had complications!!! A blood-clot developed and my scrotum slowly began to fill with blood until it swelled to the size of a bowling ball, and took over ten weeks to return to normal! It was excruciatingly painful. As they thought the weight would be too much to handle, they used sticky bandage to form a kind of hammock around my non-shaved thighs - I still remember the sudden agony as they ripped the bandage off. That was ages ago though - you'll be fine! Very Happy Peter

Ball-hammock Shocked
Thanks guys - if that's what it used to be like, maybe keyhole surgery isn't such a bad idea.
I am actually feeling a bit relieved Sheep Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Don't panic. You'll be fine. My boss had both sides done using the same method last month, and he was chomping at the bit to get back to work after 7 days like nothing had ever happened. HR wouldn't let him though as he'd been signed off for two weeks Rolling Eyes

I was diagnosed with a a stomach hernia a month ago, not good when you are a self employed gardener...takes 2 months just to see a surgeon then will probably have to wait months to get an operation - I am starting back tomorrow hedging etc. May as well do the work whilst it's Censored and need to look for a new job Rolling Eyes

Two of my clients have gone down with lung cancer which puts things into perspective Rolling Eyes An eighty year old who will be OK but the 35 year old will die and leaves 2 kids and a wife - not so worried about my hernia now!

Finger up the jacksey on Monday to check out the prostrate - Oh Joy Shocked

I won't be shaking his hand afterwards - that's for sure Whistle

Good luck with the op Matt Thumbs Up

Nice to hear from you Zag - but not so nice to hear what about Sad

I hope you get fixed up quickly and properly Thumbs Up

Makes me remember how lucky I generally am with my health and with the health system here (admittedly it costs us more too). Always occurs to me that government investment in hospitals getting people fixed sooner not only means less suffering but also less resources wasted on sickness and inefficiency. God - I sound so German these days (where's the :puke: emoticon?)

I should do our trees and hedges soon, before "zay ah inzpekted" by the council again, but my guts aren't up to it. I'll have to trust my boys with the chainsaw and cutters this year - now where are the plasters? Shocked Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

I've had an inguinal hernia repair, at age 22, after having had it for approximately 6 years. That was 3 years ago. (Ornery sod that I am). I have to say, it was offered to me keyhole, but turned out to be too bad to do keyhole, so went for open surgery. Having had the open surgery, I was written off walking for 6 weeks, working for 10. It was painful before, and painful after, I still have to be careful about what I lift and push/pull, but have had no problem passing a Police fitness test, and I work with horses. I am still capable of lifting anvils and so forth, I just have to be careful in how I do so.
All in, there is no pain now, but I have to be conscious of what I am doing. Nothing to be frightened of, just take your time in recuperating afterwards, especially if you do a physical job/hobbies

Cheers mate - I think I'm getting the easy option. I picked up a bag of feed today and realised how much worse it's got in just a few weeks and how glad I am to get surgery soon. Hope your recovery continues well Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Hi Mal, hi all Smile

All went well and nads are still intact (thanks - I realise the question was purely medical) Laughing
Just had my drains out (it is as bad as it sounds, considering the affected area) so I'm all unhooked. Mind you, it must have been bloody painful for Neo..

Unfortunately, wifey won't tell me if anything's arrived in the post yet in case I try and get home tonight Rolling Eyes
I would...

Anyway, thanks to all of you for your advice and support and if anyone has this operation to look forward to in the future (at least by keyhole/laparoscopic surgery) don't worry - it ain't that bad Wink

Cheers

Glad to hear that it all went well for you, sounds like it's different here as I had mine as a day case! Op done, quick slap round the face and bundled in car for the trip home - no drains either (didn't even get lunch - well I was unconscious so missed it!)

Take it easy on the recovery and afterwards, I'd recommend getting a support belt for those times when you think you might need it (digging the garden, carrying 6 huge steins of beer - that sort of thing) they come with two plastic 'lumps' and seem to give decent support post op (they are really for pre op, but my doc suggested it for afterwards)

The German hospitals always try and keep you in for a week here (more dosh) and the Belgian insurer wants you to be an outpatient, so everyone gets frustrated. You're a braver man than me - I was groggy as hell last night.
TBH I would be okay to go home now but fighting off Wifey AND German nurses would be too much effort... and no fun if Wifey is involved Wink

Thanks for the support advice - I've got a lot of hedging and tree-work over the next weeks (requiring heavy beer crates) so I'm going to the physio-shop tomorrow to get measured for my truss (or suchlike)
