I believe Halfords do or did at least have an offer on with a free lifetime update available. Maybe of use to you? It maybe over now though

cheers DJ, I'd also like to find out what others are using .. but Garmin seems to be the best manufacturer for GPS/Mapping.

Might be worth looking at the memory map kit, can't remember the model number(700 I think) but it's a large screen, does turn by turn sat nav and also os mapping. I seems to remember reading on the aulro forum that you can also upload additional mapping, Hema for Australia for example, maybe possible to upload European maps.

FWIW-
My experience has so far been that Garmin's are fantastic; if you're in North America- TomTom's in Europe. Now, I know many will disagree with me, but when we moved over from Canada we brought a brand new Garmin with us and bought EU Maps via Garmin's website. Not long after, the satnav was thrown into the back of the Defender and we upgraded to a TomTom within the month. Which, has performed near-flawlessly ever since (even 200kms inside the Arctic Circle in Sweden!). |

Have used Garmin GPS in the Land Rover for years for navigation off-road, comps, etc. So when we wanted a turn by turn for the car it was a no brainer to go with Garmin for that too - so got a Nuvi (can't remember which model) about 3 years ago. Was supposed to be a lifetime update offer thing with Halfrauds but it turned out to be not really the case for some reason.
Anyway, we never use the Garmin Nuvi now as it is a pain to set up. Instead with use our iPhones or iPad with free/cheap apps. As we plug our phones in anyway when we get in the car it is all good to go - no extra cables, aerials or suction pads! I use Navmii (few quid) and Dave uses Navfree (same as mine but less features and route recalc not as good - free). Both at least as good as the Nuvi. Just been watching the launch video for the iPhone 5 / iOS6 - will now include turn by turn audio/vis with Apples own new maps technology so will compare that to our current apps and see which is best for solo navigating. For more detailed mapping and route planning we use Memory Map on either iPad or iPhone - but only any good if there are 2 of you in the car - one driving, one navigating - as there isn't turn by turn audio, obviously. http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic14758.html In my Defender I am finally keeping the Nvi 750 which came standard with my SVX as with a 4Gb SDHC card it gives you full European coverage, and even today it works a treat. The only thing I did now is to buy from Amazon.com a Nvi 770, the main reason being that it has also bluetooth for the phone. Replacing the 750 by a 770 is plug 'n play, as the cradle and power cable remains the same already installed in the SVX, and the sound will be routed to the dedicated aux loudspeaker which LR installed behind the left center dash air outlet. Sound quality is magnificent. In your case though..... I have just bought a new Garmin Nvi 3590LMT, which as you can read in the above thread was intended for the SVX, but finally is going into my wife's New Beetle. LMT means lifetime Map updates for full Europe plus Lifetime Traffic info. I suggest you read the below review of the Nvi3790 which is virtually identical to the 3490 and 3590s. (I like gpsmagazine reviews because of their detail) The main difference of the 3590 is the screen being a bit bigger than the 3490. (5" instead of 4.3"). I've got CoPilot, use it on my Android phone and iPad. I have European maps and it includes Norway.
Also got MotionX on the iPad http://news.motionx.com/category/motionx-gps/ and has many map viewing options, might be worth a look. Cheers Simon |

@Eric - the 3790 is now discontinued and not touch screen but a well equipped satnav, the 3490/3590 are the replacements - but no live traffic on them - do i wait ? why not use existing kit ? - I have a toughbook running windows 7 that has MM2004 and MM2012 and lots of disk space + a Bluetooth GPS + RAMMount for the 90 and 110 - and I can import 3rd party maps but not sure where to get Norwegian OS 1:25k equivalent e-maps from - I have a tablet running windows7 but could be changed to android with a 128gb SSD I have a couple of iPhones and an iPod touch (with apple gps screen mount) - the they all have tomtom with all of western Europe on them I have some amazon vouchers ... |

What is wrong with a map?
OK, maybe not. I am also a sucker for technology for this one. As for European roads I have to say that the TomTom out preforms all other 'Road' sat-navs out there. I loved mine until I got to Cyprus where there is no commercial road mapping so the only units that work are ones made here....,. and they are still very ropey. I now use my toughbook with Memory Map..... I thin looked for about 2 hours on the web and found suitable mapping (similar to OS) and I now use that here. I also have Microsoft Autoroute, Fugawi and Garmin software which are quite good, but not as good as MM. My toughbook then also doubles up for fault diagnostic, emails home, camera downloads, music database (and movies) means it does EVERYTHING. Glyn   |
