Had this on my supposed 09 defender, subsequently found out to be a sept 08 build, that LR replaced a week ago. The new April 09 build one does not have the problem at all along with not having rear diff whine on lift off from 60 mph !

On my LR experience the instructor did mention something about the cause, and I could be totally wrong here, but he mentioned something to do with the assist on the clutch and the the speed of release of the clutch plates.

On my old vehicle it was worse when I released the clutch quickly. I must admit, on my old defender it did sound like the rear diff as well.

I forgot Keith's vehicle was an auto, so strike out the clutch theory !

I also get this relentless clunk when I change gear (unless I let the clutch up realy slowly, almost to the point of slipping it). Had new clutch, gearbox and transfer box, but still the same. Might this also be the diff, or diffs? Land Rover see to think it's normal, but I,m not convinced, because my TD5 was OK.

Had the same on my -08. In the end the dealer found that the bolt to the back axle were loose. I have not had problems with this since.

Similar problem with my June 08 110. The well recorded knocking/clanking when coming to a halt after a longish motorway run has been my only major problem. Had the brake drum and shoes replaced along with the updated clutch and flywheel but it still did not cure it. Off to the dealer again soon to try and fix again. I suspect it may be differential related as there is a loudish whine when lifting off from 120km/h and there is some backlash/clunk when changing gear (when lifting off clutch and pressing accelerator).

it's when the box down shifts in auto. i have changed the change pressures a wee bit, and that has made a difference, but is still there. does not happen all the time, just at random moments.

when using it in manual, there is nothing, but then again, the change pressures are different in manual to auto. Cheers

It could be the slack being taken up in the drive train,or has it just started Keith ? 2.4 90 XS

it has been there since day one, and has got allot better since i played around witht the change pressure. i guessed it may just be slack, so not that worried. as i have already done &.5k miles, i will wait and get the dealer to look at it when i get it serviced. Cheers
