Croatia and Alps, our surf and turf holiday
Our summer holiday with the 110, I’ll let the pictures do the talking. (limited it to defender pics)

We originally planned to tour Croatia and Bosnia but due to family reasons I had to go to Belgium so we decided to cross the alps and enjoy the ride.

3 days of Croatian sea, 3 days of Italian/French alps and a 5 day family visit in Belgium. Say a surf and turf topped off with a nice familiar dessert. Cant go wrong, does it?

Total distance covered: 3500km
Height difference: 3000m
Max Intake Air temp: 46°C
Min Intake Air temp: 2°C
Fuel consumption: 359 liters
Avg consumption: 10.26 l/100km – 27.53mpg
Pictures taken: 2089

We started of from home to Krk in Croatia, 680km of motorway through Austria, Slovenia and Croatia.

Met there with a friend who brought his RIB for some water enjoyment. We were warned about swarms of tourists but season was very low till then so not to much hassle.

The isles with their unspoiled pebble beaches are marvelous.

The RIB was great.

Croatia is surely planned for future holidays although the mining situation is a bit worrying me to really venture off the beaten (even if others do).

Left Krk island just before they shut down the bridge due to heavy winds. Found a place on the Slovenian border with Italy to sleep although we had to find the backside slope of the mountain as the storm setting in was so heavy the defender was scarily rocking around when parked. (not talking inside the RTT, just parked along the track)

We crossed Italy in one stretch.

I found a campsite one day before leaving referred to as a 4X4 oriented place. Indeed it was. LR was well represented although the most eye catching (but for other reasons) was this one.

The area around Salbertrand is open for traffic, even the non paved mountain roads.

Passes range from family track type non paved to washed out steep-drop roads and conditions change every year/with the season. Some tracks have an easy direction and I we surely took one that would have been a challenge in the other direction. In other words it is a paradise.

We kept to the most known passes as we only had 3 days but will surely come back soon here as this is nearly heaven (yep, about 3000m closer).

If anyone would like the tracks in kml or gpx I’ll sort them over PM. Googling someiller, fenestrelle, asietta also pops up a lot of info on these roads and region.

We left Italy over the Colle de Frejus and ended the day at the Lac de CCCC. Quite impressive especially if you drive it up from italy and realize what this water would do if that dam broke.

Another stretch over Luxemburg to Belgium for the family part of this years holiday and back over germany-austria home. (even dared to take the same road the engine blew back in January, no bad spirits this time)

Back home now and trying to switch the mind back to normal.

MPG footnote
For all those Defender owners waving on the highways wondering what we were gluing to the back of that truck in front of us; I managed a 7.6l avg consumption over 1470km door to door.
That’s 37.16 mpg over 913 miles.
Couldn’t believe it myself with RTT and 400kg load + 100l extra jerry cans

Avg speed 83 km/h (51.5 mph) which is not that much difference with a 100km/h avg you get with a standard family car on that identical trip.
With the merc I manage the same trip in 10 hours, avg speed 147km/h (91.3)mph but with a consumption close to 9l/100km (31.4 mpg) and almost no load.
Who’s the eco green one now?

Superb, just added a new place to the list to visit. I take it your defender is chipped as my 2008 110 station wagon with roof rack is getting 5LPH or there abouts....
