The G wagon has been well-proven as is German Engineering. For me personally it just 'doesn't do it' from an aesthetic point of view. Noworries clocks up significant mileage in his but changes it regularly I wonder how long one of his ex-vehicles would go on for? There must be a few Defenders that have been round the clock several times, we just don't get to hear about them! I may of course possibly make an exception to the G55 AMG 354BHP version they brought out.

I'm presumably he maintained the vehicle - serviced, cleaned things, replaced things. No reason any Land Rover couldn't do the same, but especially the earlier more basic ones. Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

Just what I was thinking! There must be many 'Series One', Series II, IIa and probably III vehicles which have done this or greater mileage, and done it completely unreported. Newer coil-sprung vehicles being more complex might have more issues, but I have no doubt that even a Puma would do it provided it was looked after and driven properly.

Even without using it as an excuse to take a pop and Land Rovers, it's pretty inspiring stuff. A nomad in the true sense of the word.

It's interesting to note the lack of snorkel, winch, spotlights, etc., and I'm sure Brendan is delighted to see roof bars rather than a full roof rack Laughing Darren

Tom Sheppard's shift from LR to Gwagen is well documented, as are the problems he initially had to resolve and was still taking a bit of a flyer due to an unresolved electrical fault potentially leaving him stranded in the Sahara.

MB are selling Gwagenss as prestige vehicles and a current one is far too complex for overland use. There are plenty of older LR's trundling around the world. I recall an article a few years ago about an Austria who had been travelling solo for decades in a Series. Tony

Great story, very inspirational, sad to hear his wife had passed away. I have a photo of The Holtorfs on my vision board, one day.....

no reason any proper 4wd couldn't do the same with proper maintenance, more info here...
