Car wanted for 3k, any ideas?
Not keen on French stuff, Toyota/Ford maybe, can be a 2 door and petrol. Wanting something which is cheap to tax, insure and run for my wife who only does about 2 miles a day to get to work and back - I've tried to get her on a scooter but she saw through that one when I topped up her 50K life insurance Shocked drat and double drat, foyled again Laughing

my wife has got an 06 ford fiesta with a 1.6 diesel engine that costs £30 to roadtax; £230 to insure and does 60mph. Sorry its not currently for sale but i would highly recommend a search on autotrader for something similar. Thumbs Up

2 miles a day hardly seems worth it. My wife goes on the bus better for the environment.

Good for her, would take about an hour on the bus, would mean she would get up at 5.30 and be home at 7pm or 9pm and have no time to herself at all as she works evenings, marking, planning etc. She did cycle but was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and she will need a car at weekends/holidays so.........can we not let this thread veer off the question RK, car feedback will be very helpful.

FG I was thinking about a Fiesta, she drives our diesel SAAB at the moment but it's the wrong vehicle for such short journeys, never gets a chance to heat up properly, not good for turbo and battery charge which is why I was thinking petrol unless the new diesels are more suited. I will use the SAAB instead!

Have you considered a Smart For2?

For 3k should be able to get an 05 plate with less then 40,000 miles on clock.

Wide doors might be helpful.

Good as a shopping trolley. However if your road are heavily potholed then they will be felt!

Jo bought a Fiesta TDCi recently for her to get to work. As FG says Censored all tax, insurance and over 54 mpg. John

Need to get two kids in the back with luggage so a Smart wouldn't be any good Brendan let alone Surrey pot holes, they are back breaking enough in the Series with parabolics on Shocked

We had a Ford Ka for similar purposes. Tiny engine, lots of torque so easy to drive, absolutely no power at all.

Cheapest car to fix I've ever owned. New steering rack under £40! Tiny tyres so they're cheaper than bike tyres, easily under £30 each. Almost nothing to go wrong.

A wheel at each corner and fairly light weight meant it was a riot down back lanes. Only downer was, it was probably the only car that's noisier than a Defender on the motorway! Mainly due to 5th being very short. Probably not an issue for your use though.

Fiestas are the same car underneath so that'd get my vote. Don't expect to love it though Confused

JSG you mean the Series, she cannot drive it, can't go from 2nd to 3rd. I had to go and rescue her once Rolling Eyes So will sell that and use the money to get her a small car whilst i tow with the SAAB for work. I will know wether my 110 is going as I am viewing my first choice yacht this weekend in Plymouth Very Happy

TwoPoints, we hired a Ka in Sweden, thought it was OK, hacked along the motorway. Liz isn't bothered what she drives as long as she can get both kids and their luggage in the back although she would prefer the bigger SAAB which I am taking off her Whistle

Smart For4 then?

They do not hold their value as well as For2 so you might get a younger one.

I used a Daewoo Matiz as a run around when I was between Land Rovers a couple of years ago, which was excellent. Small and nippy - a bit like driving a go-cart - but with four doors so ideal for kids. Low tax, frugal three cylinder petrol engine (all 800cc of it!) and an absolute doddle to drive. The only downside was that using the aircon had a noticable impact on motorway speeds Laughing Later versions made the huge leap up to 1 litre engines too. Darren

We were in the same situation a few months ago, we live in a village Mrs S is a teacher but needs to drop off our older daughter at another village school before going to her's her total journey is only 3.5 miles but with no footpaths impossible to walk.

We spent a while looking around at specifications etc and in the end went for an Audi A2, it's a great little car the one we found was top spce AC etc, it is only £35 a year to tax and does 65mpg + !!

The car only has four seats but has four doors so is easy for the kids has a massive boot given the size of the car and is all Aluminium construction without the LR build issues so should see us through for a few years.

Jason.
