Looks like new tyres are going to be labelled to tells us how they perform in the wet or affect fuel economy: FROM BBC NEWS

Most tyre fitters have not got a clue either I have constant battles with miss matched tyres wrong load index speed ratings mis matched tread patterns etc etc

My local tyre fitters are very very good IMHO despite being in the local "rough" area but I bet 90% just buy the cheapest as to most a tyre is a tyre

This has POPPED UP ON THE BBC again today as the regulations are now in force. The article is making much of the 'better tyres saves lives' angle and I wonder how that will translate into insurance? If a Defender, for example, comes out of the factory with tyres rated 'B' for braking in the wet but we want MT tyres with a rating of 'E' or whatever, it wouldn't surprise me if insurers use that as an excuse for a hike in premiums.
On an ordinary car, as long as a replacement tyre has the appropriate load and speed rating then nobody really takes much notice of what's fitted. By giving them ratings as described though, insurers (and Police, I guess, in the event of a serious accident), have another stick to beat people with. Higher premium is just another running cost
What if tyres & wheels are switched around for terrain? You would need all-tyre clauses. Etc. 4 x 4s have better engine braking & traction. Why don't we get discounts for those safer features on Defenders? Land Rover Defenders. 67 years heritage, minimal appearance changes, still going strong all over the world. Not a fashion vehicle, but fashionable to own. Made for the needy, not the greedy. Ta ta Defender |

About time it was introduced, too:
We can now easily see that the Toyo XYZ is A rated for braking, B rated for rolling resistance/economy, B rated for noise and costs sixty quid. The Hing-Kong-Ko Alpha is D rated for braking, D rated for economy and D rated for noise but is only fifty. But although the Michelin 123 is A rated for braking, A rated for rolling resistance, and A rated for noise it costs ninety. No Theyre all the same so Ill buy the cheapest or Michelins save you money advertising hype, the customer can in future make a comparison and choose the most appropriate. As for handling etc., all pretty subjective, everyone has their favourite... Peter |

If you choose winter tyre according to the new labeling system youre bound to get into trouble. The tyre pushers in Norway have created their own label system for winter tires to help consumers in making the right choice.
