Stuck sump plug

Hi everybody,

Just wondering if any of you could offer some advice on how to remove a well and truly stuck sump plug from my Td5 90. The plug has started to round off and even a repair socket wont grip it without slipping off.

Any suggestions before I take it to a garage?

1999 Defender 110 Td5 SW Caledonian Blue

Mine was the same due to an over enthusiastic mechanic, in the end off to a garage and they had a socket with teeth so as you tried to undo the sump plug the harder you tried the more the teeth dug in. 1999 Defender TD5 110

If you are good at welding, try and weld a good nut on and then undo, it has worked for me before, (i did not do the welding)

I did read about welding another nut on but I don't have the space or the equipment. I guess taking it to the garage is pretty much my only option. I bet with it up on a lift and with the right tool they will get it out in about 30 seconds!

Oh well. I have a Difflock drainplug ready and waiting to avoid this problem in future!

I was about to suggest fitting a difflock drain plug. If you take it the garage you might as well get them to do an oil and filter change and then fit the the difflock plug as they will have to drain the oil anyway. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I've got a stud extractor for a 1/2" socket, and I think the Td5 sump plug will fit in it OK, i've also got some wall drive sockets that usually grip pretty well.

I'm about 5 minutes off of J16 M4 if you want to bimble down, I'll have a go at cracking it off.

Thanks for the offer Jim but got the local garage to loosen it off for me. Difflock drainplug in to avoid this problem in the future!
