Engine Upgrades for 2.2
I have a new-ish 2.2 that is yet to have its first service, but I would like to plan for some upgrades.
I am quite pleased with the standard 2.2 setup, but would like to investigate what is possible without changing too much. There seems to be lots of information about intercooler upgrades, remaps and hybrid turbos for the 2.4, but little for the 2.2. Are these available yet?

I am happy to experiment with small changes whilst in warranty, but not sure an intercooler change and new turbo might not give the delaer a get out clause if anything else goes wrong.

Is it possible to have a remap based on a future intercoller and turbo change, or is that being silly?

I recommend not to mess with factory warranty risk. And if you would thereafter intend to buy extended warranty, would leave the car in original spec then too.
I had nothing major happening to me, just things like replacing EGR valve, etc. and now recently under the extended warranty LR replaced a leaking seal between propshaft and rear diff.

If I would have tuned the car, no doubt the insurance company would have said that the leaking seal was because of messing with the power and torque output...

Just think twice before you do something, certainly as you say that the car is ok for you as it is now. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

The 2.2 remap is not publiclly available yet due to the security inside the ecu which makes it not a pratical installation on customer cars at the moment, though we may and hope to have a soloution in the next month or so for this real remap. When available a remap can be added to take further advantage over any further modifications you may make like intercoolers etc etc.

At the moment the only options are large intercoolers, electronic tuning boxes instead of remap tuning and shortly hybrid turbos when my developement is finished with Turbo Technics on this.

While at the moment ecu remaps are not pratical due to the ecu security we are also working on a new style of electronic tuning box that is MCU controlled and takes much more engine data to make it efficent than most others on the market do, which is just from the rail pressure sensor. This should give a faster more reliable tuning option with good results until a time comes that the ecu protection is cracked good eniough to make it pratical to use a real remap on customers cars.

On the 2.2TDCi at the moment there is nothing to compare to as an ecu remap is not doable so the only option is a plug in box. on other models where a ecu remap is doable then id choose a remap over the currently available tuning plug in boxes.

Well it sounds like I should just enjoy it for what it is at the moment.

When a proper ECU remap becomes available, my warranty may have run out.

Chip express have a tuning box which claims upto 40% more power and 20% more economy. These seem bold claims and it's a tuning box. One of the lads had a tuning box on his L200 and it went well but the black smoke it produced!!

At 20% more economy you would save enough to pay the £395 purchase price in a meer 40k miles. I might be wrong at that but thought I am doing 23mpg so 20% would lift it to 27.6, so I reckon you would save 98.4 pounds every 10k miles.

Think you'll pay for it in 10k! 10k at 23mpg is 435 Gal and 10k at 27.6mpg is 362 Gal so a 73 Gal saving in 10k - I'm paying ~£6/Gal so that would be >£438 saving in £10k - Where do you get fuel at £1.34/Gal?

But personally I doubt you'll see a 20% improvement!

I have a chip express box on my TD5, bought it for £50 off a mate selling his land rover. I have to say it is a large improvement over standard and fuel econ is up aswell. I will eventually get a remap though, can the box be used in conjunction with a remap? 2005 TD5 90 Hard Top
