As many of you are well-aware I am an ex-serviceman and as such believe a great deal in 'networking' and what it has to offer. Below are two links and a quote from one of the threads made by myself.
It is now 20 months since I handed my kit back and the quote below still counts. I love my job and what it has to offer. Now to the point...... We are looking for a suitable individual to join our team of three electricians. The post will have several benefits to include, company car, employer contributable pension, it is predominantly Poole and Weymouth based. The post has NOT yet been advertised and will have to be acted upon quickly to' strike early whilst the iron is hot.' Also a Marine background isn't necessarily a requirement, just need the right ticks in the boxes, two of the three of us are from aviation backgrounds. Regardless it will still go to interview and the most suitable candidate rercruited. Went to work last night at a little after midnight, went onboard and an old schoolmate of mine who also works for the company and prior to my commencement had not seen for 32 years handed me a bag of 14 fresh hand-dived King Scallops. I also found the oportunity to whip out my fishing rod for 20 minutes during my break and caught 4 mackerel, one bass and a half a dozen herring! At a little after 4 am I then got to watch the sunrise over Brownsea Island and all the while getting paid for the pleasure! Happy days! Just thought my contentedness was worthy of a little sharing! There definately is life after the military! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

We have a company that inspects our cranes after we erect them and they are run by and are made up of ex-service men and women, they love there new jobs crawling all over cranes inspecting them.
We love the stories they tell they really have been there seen it done it, great set of people we like working with them always willing to get stuck in. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough. If only I had continued with my electricians course
 Only about 3 people out of the 20 odd starters completed the course because of the 'A' Level maths that was involved. I have 2 friends who are sparkies and they couldn't believe the high level of maths involved. Takes a day just to work out how to use the calculator to solve the equations  In practice on the job apparently none of these situations come up where such involved maths is ever needed 
Hope you find the right person Mal and I would be proud to have my kids in the services - it would do them a lot of good, everyone should do a stint  |

Zag, you're right! In my experience the depth of maths you are expected to learn and the depth you use 'at the coalface' are two different levels. However if you go into 'design' that's a different kettle o' fish. My experience of the Services was one I would repeat at the drop of a hat. As with most industries/career paths as you get older it becomes more and more difficult to embrace and accept change. I have no regrets but felt that my heart no longer belonged to the Services and I was evolving into a dinosaur. It was time to leave but due to personal circumstances despite realising it was time to go still stuck it out for a further six years. On the upside I wouldn't have ended up where I have....Happy Days! 
Glyn, You would be the ideal candidate, would take the heat off of me and the 'p' taking would shift your way. Still not found my sea-legs quite, but still loving it nevertheless.  I may see if we can hold-off recruitment as there will be a potential 'pool' of talent from the successful applicants from the Forces redundancies, then go through CTP.... If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
