Quick update,

Took the defender to Gary at the Driffield show after a discussion with him on the phone last week. He said he wanted to see it as he didn't want to sell me anything I didn't need and as i was going anyway to take it there. He broke off from dealing with his other customers to run a scan on mine which was showing air flow readings of approximately half the expected values. He had another AFM with him, fitted it for me (readings now correct), checked numerous other things including the map, made a couple of recommendations and all for the cost of the parts (at show prices as well!!).

Outstanding service, a big Thank You to Gary at Alive. I will be back.

a bit off line but would it cause lack of power when warm ,dirt on the maf sensor ?

Yep.
MAF sensor problems can cause loss of power at all ranges, but is more noticeable when cold.
You don't often notice MAF isssues at high revs as the MAF degrades gradually.

Just out of curiosity, what should the MAF readings be? say tickover and 2500 rpm?

I have never had to touch my engine and I am not sure if I would have noticed any degradations over time. The comment above of revs freely to 4000 rpm would give me a heart attack and I have hardly ever seen rpm over 3000! Defender 110 DC converted Auto

It should read about 50 to 60 Kg/Hr at idle and between 500 to 550 Kg/Hr at 3000rpm. Never seen it but apparently Max value for Air Flow is 700 kg/hr.
It can be affected by engine operating temp etc and climate control operation.

The problem with the MAF is that you don't normally get a fail (error) code. Just a gradual drop off in performance.
