Yep - split intercooler for me too. Was it the left hand tank that caused your issues?

The Land Rover genuine intercooler is total junk.

I replaced it with a PROPER intercooler from Pete Bell. Much bigger, NO crappy plastic tanks.

ALL the hoses AND the intercooler now replaced with awesome silicon kit from BAS. Happy days! Very Happy

that is impressive Jim.
I must admit this 2.2 engine seems a disaster. Already on new engine and now it has a failed transfer box which has damaged the "main" gearbox. Coupled to this a failure on the wiring causing engine to stop immediately on motorway as well as having internal rust in the bulkhead behind the rear seats (DCPU) and its on ly just 4 years old!!!

Whilst doing the hoses i recommend also pulling the water separator out of the air box there fore removing the restriction there :

Then you may as well rip out all the rubbish pipes and connectors from the wing to the airbox :

Get rid of the wing connector

It is really restrictive. Fit a 'Nugget' sealed kit with a much bigger diameter pipe:

Remove entirely the air 'trumpet' that goes to the airbox and replace with a large diameter hose:

Fit the new 'Nugget' connector to the wing :

And seal the MUCH bigger pipe to the airbox :

Then you have better silicon pipe work, a superior intercooler and far better breathing into the engine from the side wing.

This should all work well to get a more unrestricted flow of air into the engine at a cooler temperature.

I think there is certainly lots of room for improvement. I will say tho that my 2.2 is now at 50k miles and the only real issues with the engine have been the constant hose problems and now the split intercooler.

Easily solved. Of the 13 Defenders we've had this is the most reliable we've owned. Of course now that i've said that it will now completely fall apart!

hi jim_beam,

i have been thinking about that nugget stuff pipe to the airbox myself recently - very little interest in the better sealing but very interested in the unrestricted airflow. i was having a little scope out this morning looking at what i would need to move out of the way to remove and refit that pipework and it looks a right faff. How did you find it?

The air 'trumpet' is a bit of a faf to remove. If you look at it there is a bracket about half way down that you need to remove out of the way and then loosen off the brake vacuum drum to give a bit wiggle room.

Removing the wing connector is very easy and you can slide it off the side of the wing and out underneath wing top. I would also definitely remove the plastic wing top cover so you can get both hands in there.

If i did it again I would just cut the existing air pipe up with a Dremel and pull it out in sections. You dont need to keep any part of it. Refitting the big hose that comes with the Nugget kit is easy.

I also am not really interested in the 'snorkel' conversion and the sealing up - much more interested in the air flow.

It really growls now!

I had the same problem if the turbo to intercooler hose blowing off at the turbo end. The advice to use Mikalor clips was excellent and the 55-59mm one fits perfectly. It is twice as beefy as a regular jubilee clip and easily available via Amazon Bit of a squeeze to fit it, but this seems to always be the case with anything Land Rover!
