Looks like it has a roll cage. The A-pillars are really weak on these things.

Yes but they dont collapse past the seat - ask any LRE instructor they will tell you when they are about to roll the sit down into the seat Laughing Wink Mike

In this tragic accident, the only ones with light injuries were the driver and co-driver, wearing seatbelts.

Interesting point made about multiple impact accidents - all the ncap tests are based on mitigating a single impact. Once the car has played all its cards by deploying airbags and crumpling, any subsequent impacts are going to be pretty horrendous. As cars are now engineered to meet these limited criteria tests, could it be argued that the tests have in some respects led us down an engineering blind alley?

I understood the reason Defenders haven't been imported into the US of A for a number of years is due to the lack of airbags. The reason why it has not been possible to fit them is due to to the inherent structural weakness of the front bulkhead and steering column assembly. The vehicle bodyshell is not computer designed monocoque, the basic bulkhead design including it's attachment points etc is decades old.

So, 3 airbags in the passenger seat looks like a luxury car Laughing Laughing Laughing

I hope the LR engineers were thinking in put at least one airbag in the new Defender.

Here some pictures off a 300 TDI 90 that hit a tree head on.
The woman driving the 90 wanted to pick up something that fell off the chair and while doing that she steared a little to the right and hit a tree. She was doing about 80 km/hr.
She is lucky to be alive as if she had been sitting upright I am not sure she would have survived as there is just enough space to sit between the steering wheel and the seat.

Look at the rear door it is completely damaged just by the force off the spare wheel. Roel
