Front Discs and Pads
The time has come for me to have the front discs and pads on Big Black changed. What sort of price should I be expecting to pay? I've had quotes of £550 and £380+VAT (both from main dealers - independants don't seem to get back to me with prices Rolling Eyes )

Each disc is around 50 quid and pads about the same for a full front set. +vat. I would guess 2 hours labor. Puma 110" SW

BMW quoted me £350 for all 4 wheels pads on the BM
I purchased some from EBC (british made) and famous for motorbike pads for less than £60 and fitted them myself in 1 hour (ebc have an ebay shop and do different grades of pad dependent on vehicle usage) DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

£380! Bloody hell labour is expensive these days!

Unless they've changed since the Td5 days, the discs need not be anywhere near £50 a go. £20 a side from Paddocks for proper Mintex ones, or £27 for vented ones if it's a 110/130. A set of branded pads shouldn't be any more than £20 from a motor factors. Or again £15 for Mintex ones from Paddocks.

Okay so obviously you'll pay more for discs and pads in genuine Land Rover, but they'll only be Mintex, Lockheed or Ferodo or similar re-boxed. So why pay the premium when you can just get the proper branded stuff from a motor factors or even Paddocks!

Couple of hours work I would say, mostly due to the fact that the brake pipe bracket on top of the swivel housing probably won't be slotted (unless they've changed them) so you'll have to disconnect and re-bleed the hydraulics. Mine are all slotted so you can just take the caliper off and tie it up out of harm's way to get the hub off.

To just change the pads (if the discs are OK) is no more than 1/2 hours work, probably less if all goes well.

I get the impression you don't want to do the job yourself though, in which case the main cost is going to be labour anyway so you might as well take it to a dealer.

At the prices I've been quoted I think I'll be doing them myself. It's just a huge lack of space at the moment and a small hand injury that's getting in the way.

Although tonight my dad said he'd do them for me if I get the parts, so alls good there!

My 2p worth............if you need to bleed the brakes i found the Gunson Ezybleed value for money. Made life so much easier. And as said above it's quite a straight forward job. BM52

Ive just typed EBC brakes into google, they do various pads for different uses, they also do standard vented discs, groved disks and groved and holed disks, the quality is excellent and used on motorbikes and modified cars, UK company and the parts for a Landy are less than £300 for 4 off disks and pads all round. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

The only issue with drilled and grooved discs is that they fill up with mud and s***e off road, the effect is that it wears your pads down super quick!

For on-road use they would be fine of course, though I doubt the braking advantage would be noticeable on a Defender.

Will order the bits next week... Any particular brands you'd recommend to get? Or to avoid?
