2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Java Black
Favourite Engine Oil
Hi guys,

Just picked up my new toy last week - Defender 110 SW 2.4 TDCI 2007. Have a question for you - I had to have the sump pan replaced yesterday due to a leak and the dealer stuck in Shell Helix F 5w-30. The engine before felt nice and tight with a nice throaty sound but now is all tinny and much looser. Having had the last owners service bills I called the garage that did the last service who said that they used Fuchs Silkolene Supersyn.

Can anyone share their experiences with different engine oils and recommendations for the best oil to use?

Thanks in advance.

Mark

I would suggest that what you can hear is the "dealer effect" I'd have alook arond the engine bay, top and bottom then check all your levels just to be sure,

Ive even heared of people having 75 psi in there tyres and wondering why all seems load and rough! until they checked

but for me its magnatec

That Fuchs oil is slightly different in that it contains ether technology. However, the Shell oil used meets the Ford specification for the 2.4.

Perhaps they did an engine software download or something?

Do you mean ester technology? I'm astounded by the difference in 'feel' between the oils.

Do you think that the Fuchs is a better choice than the Shell?

Thanks,

I spotted that too. I don't think that putting ether in engine oil would do the engine much good!

It's something to do with putting polymers into the oil which act as an anti wear barrier when cold or hot. Bit baffled by it at the moment.

Yes, the Fuchs is a top over engineered oil really. 'Oilman' who is a member here sells it and understands the ins and outs. I don't know anything about the Shell products so can't comment.
