Mine has just stated to do this also, and when using wash wipe it now does not park correctly.

Had that on my old 90, was a wiper park relay which was faulty.
Got a new one from Paddocks and fixed it. Don't know whether the new ones are the same, but I expect so. Don't ask me where is was and how fixed as I've forgotten, but I vaguely remember it being on the wiper motor. Some one with more experience (or better memory) will know. There is a park solenoid that connects to the wiper motor.
Not sure how you replace this on a Puma but I have done it on my last 300tdi and my current td5. Easy to do but you have to take the dash apart to get to it. Local main dealer can supply or via eBay if you do a search Good luck Mark |

Park switch on motor has failed. Easy to replace - a while back I posted a "how to" on the forum.
Let me know if you can't find the thread. Bottom line it's not difficult but is fiddly and takes a while. EDIT - Just noticed you have a TD5 not a Puma. Found the part number its - 520160. (Same for puma and TD5)
Cost - £7.22 or £21 genuine. |

Paul, please could you then do a pictorial 'how to' if you decide to replace this yourself, sounds like a fairly common fault

I decided to tackle the job this morning.
Bit of a how to guide for a TD5 Defender. Tools, Small stubby posidrive. Normal posidrive. Terminal Driver. Snipe nose pliars. Parts, 520160 - Same for TD5 & Puma Defenders. Note the spring clip, this is how it attaches to the wiper motor. Click image to enlarge 1, Remove the passenger side speaker trim, and flop down, also remove the small bit of trim that covers the door check strap. This should expose the bottom of the wiper motor. Click image to enlarge 2, Remove the top of the dash, this involves the small stubby driver for the vent and dash top screws, you also have to remove the drivers dash board and take out the screws along the top and the bottom of the trim which is around the wiper motor. Click image to enlarge 3, You can now see the top of the motor, and the wiper park switch. Click image to enlarge To remove, pull out the multi plug on the RHS, leave the other wires in place. To remove the switch, push the switch towards the window with a terminal driver. Its a bit tight and a buggar, so brute force required, the switch should then flop out. Take the wires off the old switch one by one, and fit on to the new switch. In picture one, the spring clip can be seen, this has to be pushed downwards to fit the switch, very fiddly two hand job, takes some doing but i did it after two attempts. After fitting switch, replace multiplug and test the wipers, mine worked fine afterwards! The old switch - was high resistance. Click image to enlarge Now find all the screws and refit the dash. When the park switch fails, do the wipers return to park position, in between intermittent wipes, and after wash.
As mine do, and think this is odd. Would have thought that if switch was U/S then they would never park. Andy |

Hi
Mine failed on 2007 Puma. Wipers parked on intermittent, but nothing else (not sure about after wash). Replaced park relay at weekend. Easy enough to do, but fiddly. Had to take all screws out of dash (3 on top and 6 or 7 either side) and ease whole dash back at passenger side. Then you can access and change component. all back together and wipers now work perfectly. Mike |

What actually happens depends on the failure mode. The most common failure mode seems to be when the wipers don't park (ie they'll stop immedaitely the stalk switch is switched off); this is caused by an open circuit on the switch contacts that put the permanent +12v feed to the motor in the non-park position. I have also known this pair of contacts to fail in closed position, which means that the wipers simply keep going and cannot be stopped except by turning the ignition off. This is less common but more alarming! Finally, the switch may also fail so that the back-emf braking circuit in inoperative (ie the contacts that earth the non-earth feed to the armature fail open-circuit). The symptoms of this are less noticeable, the wipers just don't stop so quickly and may start the upward stroke when parking. All of these failures are rectified by replacing the park switch. The symptoms you are describing suggest that the wiper relay itself may be on the blink.
No such thing as a park relay, it's a park switch. On the Puma (and I am sure the same is true for other models) it is relatively little extra effort when replacing the park switch to remove the motor completely from the car and clean and regrease the worm and wheel gearbox in the motor. with the motor out, if you rmove the wiper arms from the spindles you can also remove, clean and grease the flexible drive rack and lubricate the wheelbox spindles properly. Adds perhaps 1/2 hour to the whole job. the results are well worth it, since the wipers will runs as if the actually want to afterwards, quicker and quieter. |

I had exactly these symptoms (wipers stopping when stalk released) last week on a Td5. Bought the relay and the park switch just to be sure, but changed the relay first as that's a 5-minute job. Seems to have cured it. Plus I took the opportunity to put the VW '99' relay in - perfect for British drizzle

Hi everyone,
I've driven Land Rovers of varying types in the forces, but I dont remember coming across this fault. I fitted a 99VW rely for variable intermittent speed wipers, not too long after my Puma developed this fault. Although It seems common, I'm just wondering if those who had this problem also had carried out the 99VW relay mod? I've changed the park switch, but dont want to keep doing that if the problem develops from the 99relay. thanks GSD |
