IBEX INFO!
Just wondering what connection Ibex has to LR if any. Who makes them or the kits and what do people do with them, how long have they been around, what are they made of, how much are they? They look a lot of fun Very Happy

Ibex have been around for a few decades. Extremely capable vehicles with amazing approach and departure angles.

Foers engineering of Sheffield (?) made the original vehicles.

You normally need a donor vehicle to base your Ibex on.

Cheers Zag!
They have no connection with Land Rover..
They are of a monocoque galvanised construction and use a huge amount of the Defender as a donor...running gear, suspension, door handles, dash seating etc.
they've been around for over 20 years now, the F8 is the latest 'evolution' (the only!).
You can buy them as a 'shell' and buy your donor vehicle and go from there. You can buy them factory built on a new plate, or we build them using donors..

Alex (owner of S4x4) has his supercharged monster....

I have owned one..

Costs vary, used you can pick the old style up from around £5k, new £30k or new/donor £22k depending on spec of course!

The Foers Ibex used to be a popular conversion for a Defender, taking the Defender dash and controls, transmission and running gear and putting them onto a vehicle with a galvanised chassis and with flat slab sided panels that were, allegedly, easy and cheap to replace but strangely always cost a small fortune when you bought them from Foers.

They had a loyal and growing owner's club that used to organise events like the Ibexfest and generally help promote the brand and drive improvements as well as maintaining the "Ibex register" - a register of most of the chassis numbers and pictures of the completed vehicle. The vehicle was legendary in the challenge scene with "Team Ibex" pushing the boundaries.

The brand faded into obscurity though when the manufacturing rights were sold to a specialist vehicle manufacturer who basically sat on it and alienated the existing vehicle owners. The combination of this and the changing UK challenge scene saw the vehicle's popularity dwindle. The register disappeared into obscurity due to a lack of interest form those it was offered to and the owner's club seemed to go with it.

The vehicle's manufacture has been taken back "in house" now and there seems to be an attempt to resurrect the brand by finally trying to fix a few of the things they were criticised for 10 years ago. They've supposedly reduced the weight (the average built up Ibex was often in excess of 0.5 tonnes heavier than an equivalent Defender) and are supposed to have sorted out some of the problems with their bonded panel system that could make Defender galvanic corrosion look minor.

For me the heart went out of the Ibex in the early 00s and it will never be the same again. I nearly bought one back in the day but was persuaded that a Defender was cheaper and, in the long term, more sustainable than an Ibex. When it comes down to it it's only a Defender with a body kit and a galvanised chassis. Many of those who used to be at the forefront of promoting the Ibex have sold up or are still trying to sell and have gone back to Defenders. There are several very well equipped Ibex sat in sheds/garages around the country that are for sale but the owners have never had an offer that comes even close to what the vehicle would be worth if you weighed the body in and sold the rest of the parts off. Back in the day second hand Ibex were snapped up as soon as they came on the market but that was then...

Which one ? There were at least four of them that I know of (two of them are in the pic I posted). One of them is now a 300TDi, of the other three two of them are up for sale.
