first solo trip to the alps, where to go?
well guys after being inspired by Shazzy90 and his trip without a guide last year I have talked the better half around and am starting with a trip to the french alps this summer, but.....

I can't find any info on tracks that can be driven withi=out paying a months wages to a guide, no disrespect to hese companys, but it will never happen finiancially if I have to save that as well,

what I'm really worryed about is driving of and getting cheesie garlic PC plod dropping an EU debt sized fine on me for driving on the wrong day,

as per top gear for working on a sunday in italy, I know that issue will not aplly but you know what its like on the continent, they even drive on the wrong side Shocked

seriously though, any pointers on the legal side of things and any general rules or good places to head for would be much apreciated,

Mark, if contacting any of the local guys, offer to take out some items which is either hard to get or expensive to be shipped out to them. Also take some of your local beers etc out with you, can all help to break the ice.

If there is either a national/local 4x4 rally taking place roughly when you are planning to go, turn up and see what develops.

Mark, have just remembered that the sister forum, Disco3 has a Francophone forum.

OK most of threads/posts are in French, but if you do not speak/write French I am sure you will be forgiven putting a post up in English.

Am not sure of numbers of Disco3 French members compared to Def2 but must be worth a shot

There's certainly some easy land-rover tracks on the East side of the Annecy valley - I've driven there a bit in my Discovery. There's a restaurant quite high-up, which you can drive to in Summer (probably ski-able in winter), and most of it is on rough unsrurfaced tracks.

Around Annecy there's lots of paragliding takes place from the hills to the East of the valley, and the 4x4's drive all over the place collecting paragliders who have come down on the hillside.

There's also some near Morzine, I have driven in my mate's Freelander.

I'll have a look at the 1:25000 and 1:50 maps later and see if I can be more specific...

I'm back at the Alps climbing in July Thumbs Up Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

some more info:

1. DO NOT SPEED IN SWITZERLAND ( I can't state this enough, they have absolutely no sense of humour when it comes to anyone misbehaving on the roads - expect kinormous fines / prison / 20% of your income fines) - they will find you.

2. If you go to Chamonix - there is a small train next to the main train station, mer du glace, spend an afternoon on the train and see the glacier and the ice tunnel

3. there's some great barrages in the area, well worth a look over one or two.

4. there's a great 4x4 shop in Geneva near the AutoBritt LR dealers, both should be marked on your sat nav.

don't forget to share you plans with us before you go Thumbs Up

Tips

... I often use the eurostar, and arrive early, they often let to on an earlier train (free or for a little extra) so when planning the route, don't worry too much about waiting around at the chunnel.

Agree with the above, let the train take the strain. Only 30 min crossing, and got hour earlier train out, no cost, 26 hour earlier train home £3 cost Thumbs Up

Excellent service, and not effected by the weather.

I can also highly recommend bothering ZeDefender, if you need advice or assistance in the Munich area. Bow down Bow down
