With all the camping we have done we hardly ever used a fridge, beer can be kept cool in a bucket along with milk and plenty of food keeps for a few days until you re-stock. UHT milk keeps well, I suppose it all depends where you are going and how light you want to be, a fridge is probably the heaviest most luxurious item!

Gas (absorption) or thermoelectric fridges are Ok for use in low ambient temperatures but cannot be used on the move (on gas) or inside your vehicle when parked up (on gas) and struggle on 12v to cool at higher ambient temperatures. They also use a lot of power on 12v so realistically a waste of time and money for anything other than weekend camping use IMHO.
12v compressor fridges use less power on 12v and work much much better at higher ambient temperatures. 
12v compressor fridges are more expensive than absorption or thermoelectric fridges but you get what you pay for. 
That's my opinion anyway but I guess someone will be along to say different but WTF do I know. Bare minimum? A couple of pairs of clean jockeys and socks, passport (if needed) V5 (ditto) plus cash/plastic Fridges do not come into bare minimum kit! Either eat in greasy spoons or take rat packs plus billy can. Brendan |
