Puma Gearbox in 300TDi
Is it possible to fit the gearbox out of a puma into a 300TDi. Been doing a few dual carriageway journeys and was just thinking how nice a 6th gear would be. Would it be possible without too much work, or am I just dreaming?
TIA Ben

Never heard of anyone doing this, but there's no doubt that it is theoretically possible. You would need to fabricate suitable adaptors to sort out the bellhousing (bit like we used to in the good old days of fitting Ford V6s and Rover V8s into Series Ones before adaptors became available off the shelf). The GFT MT82 box would probably fit your existing transfer box, or else you could get a complete Puma gearbox/transfer box assembly.

However, it is almost certainly not the sensible (ie cost effective and mechanically sound) way to achieve the desired result, and the suggestions above (Disco transfer box or overdrive) would be simpler, probably cheaper, and possibly more satisfactory.

You will no doubt be aware that the MT82 box is generally not held in very high regard - you have only to read the posts on this forum to see that. Personally I actually like it, and think it is no worse that the R380 box that preceded it (which was exactly perfect itself), but an awful lot of people have had "issues" with them. They do seem to suffer if there are any transmission problems anywhere in the driveline.

If I was in your position I would fit an overdrive if I wanted the extra gear, or the Disco 2 ratios if I simply wanted higher gearing.

T1G UP - Can't justify the cost of an overdrive for an extra gear just now

Sounds like its back to a Disco transfer box, thanks for the input guys! Thumbs Up Ben

On a 300 Tdi it's easy peasy, get a 300 Tdi Disco transfer box Smile

Doesn't take long to swap, see if you like it. I can't believe I ummed and ahhhed about doing mine for so long, it's magic Smile  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I've been looking at it for a while, but not had the time to do it. But with it going off the road this summer I might as well! Smile Thumbs Up Ben

Apart from cost and the manufacture of suitable adapter plates etc., could you live with a very low 1st gear?

Forgive me if I'm speaking from the other end, but if you put in a new 6 speed box then you won't gain a lot as the Puma transfer box has Disco ratios in allready, so just might as well just do the transfer box

As Martin says get a Disco transfer box. I bought one from the classified for mine for £30 and am having it fitted on 25th of this month. I'll let you know how I get on, assuming that the box I bought isn't full of nails!

Actually, that is an interesting point, since low 1st would be excessively low with the 300Tdi transfer box. Also, since the 300Tdi does not have the idle jack as programmed into the TDCi, hill descents in low 1st would become dangerous.

i doubt you will get the box to fit, its very long and adaptors plates are apparently a nightmare, or so i was told by a very reliable firm who specialise in transmissions.

1.2T t box

or the O/D, if its got an electrical fault just bypass the speed sensor and sort a switched supply to the solenoid. its normally the speed sensor that has the problem. Cheers
