United Kingdom 2009 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Java Black
Windscreen Wipers
We bought a new 110 Defender in 2008, with the new 2.4l diesel engine.

When we picked it up the wipers wouldn't turn off. The garage then put a new motor in which resolved the problem. But, now, since the new motor, the wipers make a strange click/clonk when they get to the botom of the windscreen.

The dealer has said that the car will need a new wheelbox which will involve talking the whole dashboard off. But were not really sure if this is what is wrong or not?

On top of this, the front windscreen washer doesn't work properly on the left hand side.

What does anyone think?
Thank you.

sounds like your wipers are hitting the drainage gutter at the bottom of the screen. They will probably just need repositioning. Worn wiper wheelboxes may be needed but I would check out the adjustment first.

As for the washers. have you tried unblocking the jets?

The wipers aren't hitting the drainage gutter, but they click every time they return to where they should be.

What is a wheelbox? Recently we called out LR assisatance to deal with a warning light problem, and he said it might be the linkage.

Any ideas?

The wheelbox is the spindle that your wipers attatch to. On the back of it is a wheel that is turned by a cable type linkage that is rotated by the motor.

Do you think it would make a click then? We were going to get the wheelbox replaced but the dealer made the excuse that it was broken when it came out of the box!

thank you

Yes it is possible that the wheel box clicks. It could be that the linkage isn't taught enough so it is moving a fraction, It could be that the linkage is dry and needs greasing. It is usually due to the linkage being worn. I can't see that being the case on a new defender though.

The click could even be the contacts of the park switch activating. Every time the wiper reaches the bottom of the screen the power is cut and then reactivated if the stalk switch remains in the open position. Wipers not turning off or stopping where they feel like it are classic symptoms of a knackered park switch. Did they replace the whole wiper motor or just the park switch? If it's a lucas wiper motor as used in older defenders the park switch can be replaced on it's own rather than a complete new motor being required.
