Alive Tunings OEM EGR closed fuel file.
I recently enquired to Gary at Alive Tuning about getting some OEM fuel files with the EGR closed, as not everyone wants a fully remapped Puma but would still like to have the EGR valve closed. Gary then sent me a couple altered OEM EGR closed fuel files so that you can see the differences between them. First off the software version on my Puma is 7H12-12K532-FDB which is quite old as the new LR software is at FDE on my Pumas installed software version. So the first file contained the above software with the EGR closed. All that has been changed on this file from the standard LR OEM file is that the EGR remains closed 100% of the time. The first test I did was to reinstall the original OEM file from LR and go for a run recording the live data as a benchmark for the altered fuel files. The original fuel file live data recording is uploaded HERE.

I then installed the version, FDB OEM EGR shut. This is a file based on the software version installed on my Puma. The live data for this fuel file can be found HERE. The first thing you will see is that the EGR remains closed throughout the whole test over all throttle ranges. Also the rail pressure and MAP remain the same as the original fuel file.

This is a picture taken off the Atrics ECU info screen showing software version installed on my Puma, second line down:

This pic shows the three files that can be stored onto the Atric, the original OEM fuel file plus the two remapped files I tested. The great thing about these remap interfaces is that the original fuel file goes back on in less than 10 mins for dealer visits so only you know it is remapped. Wink

The next file had me a little confused as it was labelled FDE? I always assumed that the remapped file had to have the same software version as what was installed in the ECU by the dealers etc. I am very loathe to change the software version on my Puma as it runs like a little sweetie on the version FDB, so much so I tell the dealers not to update it each time it goes in for whatever. Another point to note is this dealer software upgrade can only be carried out a few times before the ECU needs reflashing or replaced, IIRC the figure 12 times comes to mind? However remap files supplied by tuners does not get recorded as it flashes only the fuel file.
Getting back to the FDE version, I emailed Gary about this and he said he can now supply an altered fuel file using the latest LR software no matter what version was installed in the ECU meaning the remapped file would always be the latest. Bow down So even though my software ends in FDB,FDE will work, and it does. I installed the FDE version with some trepidation, but I have every confidence in the abilities of Gary, so on it went. Once it had uploaded and I had disconnected the Atric a thought appeared in the recesses of my mind which made me reconnect the Atric and check the ECU info, this is what I found:

Those in the know will realise that this software change cant happen with the Alien tech boxes, as with my IDS and MSV you need a Flash File Loader to install the updated software versions onto the ECU, remember that tuners only change the fuel file.
The live data for this version FDE can be seen HERE.

Again nothing has changed in regards to rail pressure or the MAP readings just that the EGR again stays closed 100% of the time.

I see this procedure as a much cheaper way of getting the EGR closed without having to have a full remap and purchase the Atric remap interface because Alive has many dealers throughout the UK who can install this upgrade for you. As to cost, I believe Gary will come along soon and give a better explanation than me and also what kind of costs would be involved.

Some of you may remember that I was going to remove the EGR assembly altogether? I now dont see a need for this as it would be costly and you would still need a software fix to get around the disconnected EGR plug which would throw on the MIL permanently and log numerous DTC's.

Though for me in the long term, next September that is, the whole assembly is getting removed. The Entreq EGR killer manifold will be fitted along with the removal of the gas mixer pipes and the heat exchanger (EGR cooler) allowing the exhaust manifold to be blanked and the fitting of an EGT Thermocouple direct into the manifold.

I thought this write up may be of some use to those wanting the EGR closed but unwilling to have a full remap. I will say that the Pumas throttle is crisper and it pulls better with the EGR closed over the original fuel file. The live data was taken over the same route for all three files. The first half of the run involved pedal to floor acceleration where I could and the return leg was driven as I would normally drive the route.

No problem, It will keep the LR eyes from it Smile

Though I advise you be very carefull changing software versions for long periods without completing the process correctly as IDS/SDD/MSV2 and even BBS Genesis would do of which the Alien tech cant do due to its nature.

Making a non original or software updated file go on the car with the box is straight forward eniough to do but it simply cant finish the job correctly as Landrover intended the ecu to be used and complete the pilot correction learn which is automaticlly done after a dealer IDS/SDD/MSV2 or BBS Genesis update. This is an imortant process needed after changing the software calibration on the car as it matches the injectors to the new calibration.

It may be good to use your MSV2 to finish the job since you are lucky eniough to have one. See picture below for menu option.
When you run the application make sure your cars water temprature is hot before you start the process as its temprature dependant and was a real pain in the rear to get working correctly as LR intended when we developed it with BBS a long time ago. You will note and here the noise from the injectors changing and ratteling/tapping when you run the application as it sets up the ecu to match the injectors and how they run together.

Thanks for that Pete Thumbs Up

The original remap file is back on the Puma now as I prefer that to running OEM files, even EGR closed ones, and it is FDB based which still runs like a little sweetie even after testing the FDE file. The files shown were just an idea I had for answering the emails I have received on the merits of getting a Puma remapped as not every one wants this, but the general consensus to the emails were that they would like the EGR closed permanently. The write up just shows that it can be done by reputable LR tuners like Gary and yourself without the need for a full remap or interface unit. And as I am an Alive customer, Gary was very kind in supplying the files FOC to allow me to do the write up for defender2.net and show the live data to let anyone thinking of getting this mod, the raw data/information to help them make up there own minds.

I agree, software for sure is the way to go if possibile and all without removing the EGR its self, as you say the bypass kits are not worth fitting as it will need software activation anyway. only mechanical work is needed if the standard EGR is stuck open and can not be forced shut.

If we don't have the gadgets to copy and write to the ecu i only have a bluetooth gadget that reads codes to my android phone, will a dealer be able to see the egr closed software or does it have to be taken off every time ??? If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

I think it would be advisable to take any modification or tuning off every time incase the dealers were looking for an EGR fault or other engine fault as it would show closed in the live datastream menu if they looked.
Though if you didnt they would probabally and naturally to them just do a software calibration update to the ecu to try and fix a possibile "bug" and it would wipe off the EGR patch as it would be a factory calibration again and the EGR would start working again as it should while they scratched their heads wondering how it fixed it lol.

Are you saying the original map is back on the Puma? (the one where the EGR is fully functioning again?) If so why did you put it back when surely with the valve shut the engine has to run sweeter?
