Clutch fluid contamination
Right, back to work today with nothing in the book, so decided it was a good time to service my 10MY Puma. Second service 19k miles/19 months old but all filters, diff/T-Box/Trans fluids changed anyway.

Other than dirty rear diff oil, no big issues except that on checking the clutch fluid, it looked like gravy and not the nice clear DOT4 that should be in there. Anyway, the Puma is easy enough to bleed so no problems there.

Now this is the second Puma in one month we have had similar issues with. The first was a guy from near Newport who had an issue with the vehicle revving when changing gear. Now we know the the clutch switch is linked to the ECU so the ECU can drop torque when the clutch is pressed, but what had actually happened is that the fluid had turned into what looked like snot or liquidised slugs (sorry if you are eating at this point).

Having changed the fluid and the switch, everything was fine for about 2 weeks, when it started happening again and the fresh DOT4 had re-snotted again.

Has anyone else checked their fluid and found issues with it - I'm thinking it may be affecting some of the gear/clutch issues some people have been experiencing?

Any idea what the contamination is? Is it water or the DOT4 breaking down?

Not sure on the contamination as yet. I do know both contaminated fluids were very different. Mine was red/brown but normal fluidity, the other was a slight green but jelly like.

A flush usually requires no more than a 500ml bottle.

Just something to look out for. I've got to get to the bottom of it for this customer. I'm not too worried about my situation yet.
