110 TD5 Drive issue...
Hi all,
I am a reasonably new Landy owner, but am mechanically minded and not afraid to get my hand dirty! I have an interesting issuse with my vehicle at present. It seems to drive normally most of the time, but when you put the steering hard over (either way) on loose ground it feels like the diff lock is in when it's not (well at least the lever says it's not) almost as if it's trying it's best to tie itself up in knots! We have recently changed the brake pads/discs/calipers all round and also done the CV joints too. Oh and rebuilt the handbrake assembly with new pads as it didn't have one! ;-0

If we put it on a lift so all four wheels are off the ground it all seems to work as it should. Both when moved by hand and when put in gear with the engine running. The wheels are free and smooth with no notchyness. The prop shafts feel fine too. Just not sure where to go next really.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Hi Matt,

When you say "Feels like the Difflocks enganged", can you explain the feeling?

From what you've said already I would be looking at wheel bearings or ABS sensors (if Fitted).... but what ever else you can tell us would help. 2002 Defender 110 DC

Have you checked to see if the diff lock is engaged or not but jacking one front wheel off the ground and trying to turn it? If the one wheel turns freely while the other 3 are still on the ground then the diff lock is disengaged but if you cant turn it then the diff lock is still engaged. Just because the leaver is to the right doesnt mean the diff lock isnt engaged.

I have driven many vehicles on and off road over the years. It feels as if both ends are fighting against each other. When you are on soft loose ground you get a lot of tire marks left in the gravel as if it's all locked up tight as oposed to just rolling over the ground. This is all at low speed, such as coming onto my drive from the tarmac to the gravel. It never used to do it it would just roll. When it does it, and you depress the clutch the vehicle will just stop, even though it's on a slope where you would normally expect it to roll. I hope this is a bit more of a description!?

I'm sure it does, but will check again in the morning as it's not really the weather for it tonight (Lightwieght) Wink If it doesn't how do I proceed?

Easiest way to diagnose, jack a wheel up and try to turn it. If it turns, it's not the diff lock, if it won't turn then start from the leaver an work down. 2002 Defender 110 DC

Having jacked one front wheel up this morning and found it doesn't rotate, I think it must be the diif that's the problem! Any reccomendations on where to get a replacement?

Sounds like the "disintegrating 2-pinion front diff" problem I had recently. You might like to read the thread I started when it happened to me about 3 weeks ago.

Recommend Ashcroft Transmissions for sourcing a replacement; cheaper than LR (lots) and stronger too.

Before shelling out for a diff, check the linkage is ok and that the leaver is actually moving the linkage.

Easiest way will be to remove the transmission tunnel, which should give you full access.

Remember that the diff can stick so if you do here a click or think you have done it, it may not drop out straight away, it helps to reverse the truck a little .

If all this fails, then start looking at the front diffs and CDL. 2002 Defender 110 DC
