Question
On most/all rear cross members there's a large hole on the right hand side, what's it for? There wouldn't be a problem with me mounting my towing electrics in it would there?

Common mounting place to prevent damage to socket ... my last 3 have all been moved into there Cool

As to what it's originally for - feck knows Laughing Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

I'm guessing, but was it originally for a power take off shaft to power what ever???

It's for extra trailer brakes. Not sure if it's an option on a puma. But on a td5 it was possible to tow 4 ton with the extra brakes fitted.

Same question asked and answered very recently here:-

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic9469.html

The recess is intended for the socket and is nothing to do with power brakes afaik.
