I would just paint the chequer plate satin black, something like hammerite, easy touched up, saves removing.

Apart from that nice truck Thumbs Up

I think the grills will be a personal taste thing rergarding inside or outside fitment. I think any rear passenger will prefere them on the outside. I noticed your front LED spots, can I ask what you think of them and what the beam pattern is like as I am thinking of a set to use as fog lights. Oh , and my preference would be black powder coat the chequer to match the grills.

Defo black plate not body colour. Mine had bare ali sills on when i got it and i didnt like it so took them off, wire brushed them very well with angle grinder and then etch primed and sprayed satin black both with rattle cans. Still looks as good 2 years later.

Pete.

Sorry to disappoint but the LED spots are just Hella driving lights - no beam pattern as such (bit like low dipped) but fitting them was a bit of a PITA as German regulations are very strict as to where you can mount them - that's why they're under the bumper (not an ideal position). Also they had to be wired so they go on with ignition but automatically off with any other lights. Ended up having to route through the bulkhead and into the fusebox Shocked On the other hand they are bright enough to drive (slowly) at night with all other lights off Wink

I've been happily convinced by you lot on black plate and I'm jibbing out and buying powder-coated replacements with the same drillings. I'll paint them with black matt or satin in some RAL colour so I can always "touch them up", so to speak. I'll use the plate that comes off for some other project Thumbs Up

Thanks for all your help and ideas Very Happy

I noticed that you mentioned that you hadn't fitted the back door grill yet, you say because of brake light issue. Didn't you get the grill with the cut out for the light? You will probably find that the door card will not go back on without a bit of trimming.........at the top of the card it reaches into the window space up to the window rubber seal, my guard goes below the window and fixes to the door under the card so I trimmed the card so that it fits tight to the guard. You don't notice the gap between the window rubber and the guard.
One thing I have done now is fix the grill to the door using 'Tech' screws. I originally riveted it in but had to take it off when some thoughtfull little scroats smashed the back window with a football. You can get to the brakelight but cleaning the window is pretty nigh impossibe with the grill on, as if I'd clean mine Whistle

Thanks Smile
I think (hope) I took the pic at an odd angle but I'll double check tomorrow (he says, nervously) Whistle

JWL - no, mine didn't come with a cutout but I've got some good snips so it won't be a problem. I don't mind as I really like the Safari kit - very good quality and the sides fit beautifully. Thanks for the heads up on the card. I haven't quite figured it all out yet but I'm going to use rivnuts so I can unscrew it and clean the window every, say, ten years Wink I don't want to take the card off each time, so I need my thinking cap on. In any event, it will still be secure from outside even if the glass gets smashed Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

The back door card is pretty easy to take off, there's only the grab handle to unscrew then just pop it off the door, my grill came from Simmonites, looks pretty much like yours but on my back grill there are 3 fixing points that are under the door card so it's inevitable that the card will have to come off if you take the grill off Rolling Eyes

Definitely ugly in my opinion, not to my taste. YES they need painting.

I like the grilles but i am just not brave enough... i keep telling myself my next Defender will be a Ute so that keeps me from buying them. Also i will not drill!! 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..
