Just had exactly the same just 4 years old, 16000 miles and seal has started leaking. Luckily, has extended warranty and has been replaced under warranty.

Just picking the Defender up. The problem is the splined connection between the main and transfer box. This was badly worn, but had not got to the point of failure.

So the diagnosis is gearbox main shaft wear!
Now waiting for it to be repaired.

| For some reason the aerodynamics of towing a caravan causes the rear NS mud flap on a 90 to flip forward on yo the wheel. The wheel then eats the mud flap whilst the exhaust melts it! |
