My was factory fit so easy to get to the loom, but the cables are only a spur off the main speaker feeds anyway, not separate feed from the head unit. Most ISO head units only have 8 feeds for speaker ...

Depends if the Defender loom already has a cross over, I doubt it, factory speakers usually just have a cheap filter on the back of the tweeter.
