No, I don't think it is the wrong way round as I never removed the rod from the transfer box.
I only removed it from the end attached to the gear lever. |

This is a common fault apparently.
I noticed mine was going the same way as I was replacing the chassis.
I had to purchase a new one at a cost of just over £200. |

I first removed it in 2016 to change the clutch but there was no gasket.
I removed it again in 2019 to rebuild the engine.

That's a possibility although measuring the new chassis now that the suspension, engine, gearbox, fuel tank and body are in place could be difficult.
