Have you any theories as to why the black paint will help getting the nut/washer central?

Dsc-off. Not sure but that's what it's come to....i'll try anything so here's to hoping the paint helps. very tempted to simply remove the shoes....then it won't get hot

to help the shoes move about then lub the places they rest on the back plate
use copperslip or maybe better proper ceramic grease ( not normal grease ) ceramic grease does seem to be a bit more slippery then copperslip you can get ceramic grease in small tubes from motorfactors ( about £3-4 a tube ) and only a dab of grease will do the job |

I have changed my handbrake for an Xeng disc brake.Much more powerful & positive,plus easier to adjust.

Very tempted and often thought about one. Just kinda like the idea of keeping it standard. If none of the hand brakes worked it would be a no brainer. It may well come to a change

Just noticed something -it kinda looks right but I'm surprised it's not in the workshop manual?

left spring in place as I'm sure it should be there and suspect it's a mod since the exploded view above was created.
all back together, started her up and straight away something didn't seem right (no rattle at all - strangely quiet)? moved a few foot on the drive and it was obvious the brakes were binding (a lot). crawled underneath and slacked the handbrake cable off as I knew I'd already slacked the shoe adjuster off by more than 1.5 turns as suggested in manual. climbed back in started up and tried again - brakes still binding? ...... turns out it was the brakes (not the handbrake)...brake switch was preventing the brake pedal from returning. pulled the brake pedal back up and all seems great. been for a drive and all is good. Except I'm reluctant to use the hand brake now in case it upsets something and I'm back to square one? guess I'll have to use it at some point and if it does go wrong I'll have to consider either an x eng disc conversion or a complete new original item? any how for now ![]() |

If you are not happy about the effectiveness of your handbrake whatever you do, do not park on a hill unless you also put the vehicle in respective reverse or forward gear. To be honest I always do that anyway, seen to many cars career downhill through a defective hand brake. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Always leave in gear also. Never had a issue over the effectiveness of the hand brake - it's always been more to do with it fully disengaging? |

Anyone able to either confirm below is ok or better still post a photo of theirs?
![]() Click image to enlarge Notice on the left shoe how the friction pad finishes a good inch plus from the end of the shoe unlike the right shod where the friction pad finishes close to the end of the shoe. Had always thought that these shoes were same but clearly not? |

I too have a slight trembling at 50-60 mph. i remember a noisy handbrake after a readjusting of it. The noise went away when slight pulling the handbrake an releasing it.
