turbo issue in Madrid ***urgent***
Being on a trip in Spain we were having a turbo issue this night (2.2 MY 2012)
The amber engine light came up and we lost power while mounting hills on a motorway.
It was blowing like a hairdryer.
If you erase the light, it will work in low revs but then come up again.

We called the assistance but we should wait until Monday.
Shall we take a look under the covering plastics and fix hoses ?
Is it worth while ?

Well, if not - how can I find out the Ford number of my turbo ?
I'd like to have access to their part, too, if Land Rover had nothing on stock ...

Classic sign of the described "hurricane under the bonnet" is a split turbo hose. the little elbow under the intake manifold is a favourite to go and split.

I would check all the hoses first and see.

Most likely a hose. The elbow just exit of the turbo compressor can rub on the steering column shaft (you will not see it when engine is idle or off as there is no pressure to expand the hose). But maybe can see ‘polished’ zones on steering shaft. Although that is for UK, steering on the right vehicles. I do not know if that is the case for Julie.
Intercoolers are also known to split next to headers. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hopefully it is, as it’s an easy bodge to keep you going. Gaffer tape, tie wraps, you might even get away with shoe laces wrapped around the split if you are short on materials.

^^^ ingenuity
Had a turbo hose failure on a boat... we ended up drinking all remaining beer... then cut the beer cans into spirals to create aluminum ‘strings’.
3x the fun.. drinking beer, getting it jury fixed, and arriving at destination Thumbs Up 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I’ve had 3 hair dryer sounding failures on my
2.2. 1) split intercooler; 2) hose coming out of the intercooler split; 3) the small right angle hose going into the inlet manifold split. Also I had a clamp fail causing a hose to just blow off. Definitely worth checking the hoses. Hopefully it’s an easy to access one & not that one going into the inlet manifold which is buried & hard to get at.

The elbow coming up is quite smooth and almost no oil.
The EGR outlet tube needs definitely replacement. It is
rotten between the two angles.

I wonder if it can be taped in order to fix this for thé next 2000 kms ...

Tape can work but is very much a get-you-home fix, it probably won't last long.

Not long after I bought it my '07 2.4 suffered the classic hose failure due to column abrasion problem. What surprised me was that the hose looked and felt fine in situ, the only give-away was that it was slightly squishier at one point. It was not until it was off the vehicle that I could see the rupture, which clearly opened up under boost and closed almost completely with no boost. It also, in my case, made and amusing farty whistling noise. The only way I could tape it effectively was to take it off, tape it, then refit it, and despite many lavers of duct tape the tape blew through in about 100 miles until reinforced with a section of drink can.

That being said, isn't this sort of classic roadside repair with whatever odds and ends you have to hand the reason we love our classic Defenders so much? The sense of accomplishment when you arrive at your destination is so much greater. Pity the new Defender owners who will have no option other than the recovery truck!

That's the problem. They showed me the hose split on 5 cm.
It has been changed. Tomorrow we'll be on the road again.

Interesting detail: you have to unmount in order to see if it is split or not ...
