Any idea what this “End extension” is for?

Any idea what this part is for? Parts catalogue (LR136701 & LR136696) describes it as “End extension”. Can’t seem to find anything to explain its functionality.

I had a 110 that I removed to fit a set of Black Rhino wheels. I could feel no difference whatsoever and had no issues after 10K miles. Planning to do the same on my 90.

I think it's a mud and debris scraper to clear the wheel drum during off roading

That makes sense (also why it’s made of solid aluminum.
