[For Sale] 2.4 tdci Defender engine and MT82 gearbox
2.4 tdci Defender engine and MT82 gearbox for sale due to a M57 conversion

The engine and box have 99k miles on them.

The bad bits

I had the clutch changed at about 40k miles and again at 89k miles. When it was changed the second time the garage that did the work advised me that they had issues seating the spigot bearing as the end of the crank had been ‘butchered’ when it had been changed before. In the last 10k miles the gearbox has got progressively worse with noise on tick over and the gearbox has become noisy and slack, but was still operational.

The turbo was overheated on an over exuberant rush to a train station and now squeals.

The good bits

The engine comes with a LOF POWERSpec clutch and I can include the ECU that has a Bell Autos remap applied together with their Bluetooth remap tool.

Looking for £1000 for the lot.

How much for the gearbox on it's own?

Probably not helping selling the engine, but this the risk of getting a ‘reputable Land Rover independent’ to do work that you don’t get to see for a few years. What a mess!

Sometimes it’s just best to do it yourself and know it’s been done right.

That's probably why there's little enthusiasm for your engine, if the crank's mullered it's virtually worthless, if the crank's good it has value.

Yeah, I agree with that now that I’ve seen this. I’m not prepared to deceive anyone which is why I’m being so transparent with the issues with it. I’ll strip it for bits, salvage what I can and scrap the rest.

If anyone needs anything let me know.

You could simply split engine and box, then remove the clutch to assess and photograph the damage to the spigot. That way you and any prospective buyer would know the score.

Blackwolf - the picture above is of the spigot. Someone has been in there with a chisel rather than using the proper route of removing the spigot. I suspect the spigot bearing isn’t seated true which has led to the gearbox bearings getting a hard time.

I would name and shame but it was a long time ago and that business may have changed hands.

I’d take the flywheel off it might not be as bad as it looks, although it looks pretty beat up. I have a good used polished crankshaft if it helps anyone, not hard to swap.

According to Aulro, https://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defe...moval.html. This is the tool for the job, https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/383575022014 . So for circa £12 all that damage could have been avoided !

Plenty of the same generic tool on uk auction site.

There's also a SP tool for the job if you don't like cheap options!

https://sykes-pickavant.com/products/09584...aring-tool

Absolutely no need for that degree of damage, and it is shockingly bad if it was a "professional" doing the job. If someone did that to mine I'd be after a new engine from them.
