I feel your pain I fitted one yesterday to my 2.2 Puma, I couldn't believe how hard it was. Below are a few things I learnt, I hope it helps.
I had to remove carpet, liner with soundproofing and rubber cover on pedal to get it to go low as poss. I had to bend out the metal bars with bushes in a little, then bend them back once the spring was fitted. I used a pair of mole grips to hold the spring with one hand and a tool I had in my trim removal kit in the other to force into position. Seen people use a screw driver with V cut into it. Does it though? Is that spring not there just to make the clutch depression easier by assisting when the pedal is pressed in. Without it, the clutch is 'normal' meaning you are providing all the force and then when you release the hydraulic pressure pushed up the pedal and it just rests on the Master Cylinder with a bit of gravity. Originally there is a little spring to hold the pedal up, but it does very little |

I have here TD5 without any spring on clutch pedal (old springs just rusted out), and it works normal. LOF springs are prepared, but first some more than repair is planed. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

The closer to the floor the pedal is, the easier the spring is to fit - so adjust the lower limit bolt so the pedal goes down as far as the floor will allow and hold with a block of wood. You may also find that bending one of the 'eyes' on the clutch pedal out by about 45 degrees makes it a lot easier to locate the leg of the spring.

As I understand it the spring is there to assist the clutch pedal to rise once it has been depressed, so it actually means you have to use more force to depress the clutch pedal as you are pushing against the clutch hydraulics and the spring. The idea of the LOF spring is it reduces the force required to overcome the spring and therefore makes it easier to depress the clutch, yet still has sufficient engergy stored in the spring to assist the pedal rising as you take foot pressure off the clutch pedal. |

AFAIK, the springs actually has 2 functions - when pedal is up, it creates a bit more force to press the pedal, as it is acting to push the pedal up. Once pressing the pedal goes below a certain point, it starts helping to press the pedal.
I installed one of the LOF springs on a Td5, and the clutch pedal feel became so unnatural because of this behavior, that was removed shortly after. On my Puma, I have the factory spring, but is driving me crazy with the squeaking noise (only happens when pressing the pedal, does not happen when releasing the pedal), so I am so tempted at removing. My squeaky puma clutch was inside the pedal box, it wasn’t the spring. Grease nipple on the box and pump some grease in there, or do what I did and just top the top off and sprayed some silicone grease and it hasn’t squeaked since.
