thanks Chaps

ill be getting under this weekend and have a look around.

seems reconditioned denso injectors aren't so expensive so might try a set. 14 years old and 90k a lot of fuel has been through them.

I do use millers ecomax in every tank as the fuel in Europe can be poor quality/B10/no additives 2010 90 LHD soft top

Check injectors - seal and washer kit is cheap enough.

Change/service any that are faulty

Check for heat shield rattle - around the turbo

Check the cat/exhaust isn’t rattling

Do these then report back. Also 0.5 litres of oil per 1000 miles is not normal!! > 110 XS Double Cab

Wise ones

I had pretty much the same rattle thing on my 2.4 puma, and it turned out the injectors were pretty well goosed, to the extent that No 4 was massively over fuelling. The injector bloke was surprised that the piston wasn't melted/heat damaged. I did, in fact driver her to Morocco with the rattle, towing a fully loaded exped trailer which makes me think that whilst I dipped rather heavily into my overdraft at the bank of good luck, I learned that the Puma engine isn't quite as flimsy as some would have you believe.

It's not a cheap fix buddy but if it helps, new injectors totally transformed the way the landie drives, not just the performance but the old lady is so much smoother and quieter on the motorway.
Well worth the money.

Worth using some FORTE DIESEL SPECIALIST INJECTOR CLEANER , just let tank run low, pour the 400ml into the tank, add about 20 litres of diesel to the tank and drive until the tank gets low again. Then fill tank as normal.
Better still remove fuel filter, empty it or get a new filter, fill filter with forte, then fit. Pour any remaining into low tank , no more than 40 Litres in tank and run engine. This gives the injectors the best clean.
This is easier on the 2.2 as it has a pump in tank.

Bit of an update

Did the usual checks and found nothing rattling underneath.

Got a set of reconditioned injectors ready to fit at my local dealer in Bratislava.

Arrived too early this morning, so as was just sitting in the car part waiting, thought I would plug in my upgraded nancom (upgraded for working with the problems with my 90).

With the upgraded software I can now get the injector learn to work - before the engine would never get hot enough to allow it to commence.

Net result the noise has almost gone.

From what I read on here, the learn function actually tests the function of the injectors - meaning any age related degradation would be compensated I suppose.

Injectors still being changed today - will report back further. 2010 90 LHD soft top

Be careful with reconditioned. I fitted four reconditioned injectors from an approved DENSO dealer. One lasted weeks, one lasted months. > 110 XS Double Cab

Was it from a well known company? only read good reviews about where I ordered. 12 months warranty, I'll keep an eye out. Making my Defender great again. (Or trying to at least xD)

High oil consumption - the workshop found the plastic rocker cover was cracked. No doubt this is the cause.

New one tomorrow - fit injectors and see what is next. 2010 90 LHD soft top

Well known in the UK yes. This company also provide a 12 month warranty but their warranty terms and conditions contain so many get out clauses that the warranty is not worth anything.

Not to cause worry, you will likely be fine... I'm just bitter from a bad experience I had 1,000 miles from home Laughing

I understand, that's always annoying. The company I bought mine from gives you some money back if you send the older one back... If they are in working order Mr. Green Not sure what they mean with that Laughing Laughing Making my Defender great again. (Or trying to at least xD)

This company say the following. All I will say is that their "microscopic forensic camera" is more powerful than CERN and will detect "contamination" in 99.9% of all warranty claims Rolling Eyes

4.0 Warranty Policy

4.1 Common rail pumps and injectors carry a 12 month warranty against manufacturing or remanufacturing defects, limited to the cost replacement part only.

4.2 Verification and validation of a warranty relies on proof of purchase and return of the unit for a test and report.

4.3 Warranty is limited to the cost of the replacement part only. All units are test to the manufacturer specifications using the OE test plan software on the recommended test equipment (e.g. Bosch, Hartridge)

4.4 Warranty may be rejected if the part;

has been incorrectly installed or misdiagnosed
is physically damaged due to mishandling
is found to be contaminated with dirt and/or water or non-conforming bio-fuels or additives.
4.5 All units are full bench tested following remanufacture/manufacture before being sealed and protectively packed.

4.6 Warranty claims will be void if returned units are found to contain dirty or contaminated fuel. Units stripped and tested under warranty will be inspected with a microscopic forensic camera. Parts are nonreturnable once fitted unless subsequently found to be faulty. it is unlikely that a complete set of injectors will be faulty so any potential claims for sets or multiples of injectors should be discussed with PF Jones before being removed from the vehicle. > 110 XS Double Cab
