Won’t rev from pull off in 1st.
Back in Africa & the old problem is driving me nuts! Any slight hill & whatever you do with the accelerator it struggles to rev / pull off. Once going it’s fine but try to pull off in 1st it has real problems. No fault code’s & everything I can think of has been checked / changed….thoughts?

I guess you ruled out the clutch.

What about the throttle body? Puma 110" SW

Thanks for the reply, clutch is a new power spec LOF. The clutch engages nicely & doesn’t grab also this is an old problem (that we had with the last clutch fitted) I have changed everything I can think of that would cause this. Why would the throttle body do this? What are you thinking?

NOt sure in Defenders, but in some Ford pick ups a malfunction of the throttle body causes a slow start in first gear (along with rough idle, which you do not have apparently).
And I almost certain, the 2.2 Defender needs a throttle calibration. Doesn´t it? Puma 110" SW

I take it there is no Rev hang in other gears? You could try a new clutch switch or bridge it temporarily, I used to go with it bridged, but since gone back to having the clutch switch as I had it replaced anyway.

It might be the throttle assembly, but isn’t as common.

Is the turbo working as expected and it’s electronic actuator?

VCV, not so sure as that would be all gears and rough idle etc, might be worth cleaning the MAF and MAP sensors, though you probably already have.

Any chance the fuel filter is clogged? Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

I’ve done so much reading on this! Still can’t put my finger on it. Just put a new map in & the maf is a couple of months old. Turbo blew in SA so that got replaced, did have a similar problem in Namibia which turned out to be a sticking actuator ( visited an old guy who stripped it & fixed the problem)

When you say clutch switch can you be a bit more specific? Where & how to bridge? Got to be worth a shot ( there’s no hanging in the gears when changing gear by the way)

Replaced the o/s stub axle the other day / front radius arm bushes / handbrake cable & shoes only to find the transfer box output shaft seal has gone!!! Hope the Big Mog will give me a rest in between fixing things Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

clutch switch: in the engine bay where the clutch master cylinder is (the thing attached to the clutch pedal) there's a wire and plug. Unplug it, and try it. Then bridge it at the wiring loom (just put a piece of wire in the plug to short both wires) and try again.

If your engine isn't picking up when you press the accelerator, I'd start there and make sure it's outputting the correct signals from the potentiometers..
If it is then is the fuel rail pressure rising?
I think faulty brake pedal switches may have an effect as well🤔..and prevent correct fuelling...
If you have been through all that just ignore👍😁

I put my money on the map sensor, changed it & in neutral revs free & pulls through the rev range ( Pete’s 170hp map / Pete’s silicone hoses & intercooler) but it’s heavy.

If we pull up on an incline in 1st gear literally it won’t rev, revs die & it will stall. On some big inclines I use low 2nd as it won’t pull the skin of a rice pudding in std 1st gear.

Every other aspect of driving it runs well, idles evenly never cuts out. Returns an average of 21mpg ( 115,000 mls on the clock)

What eco stuff do you have on your engine? It could be a stuck open EGR valve, but I would have thought you’d had that removed.

The EGR was removed & a de-cat was done in SA. Have a patch on the ECU from Pete.

I thought that would be the case. Only other thing I can think of is turbo not kicking in, or it’s wastegate stuck open so it isn’t getting the boost. Can you manually move the wastegate like on a Td5 turbo??

Actuator off, the rod connecting to the turbo itself is nice & free. Split the actuator & the worm drive looks to be in good condition but it doesn’t turn. Is there a way of checking it?
