Defender headlights not working

Hi all just joined the site so please forgive me if I’m mirroring a different thread.

I’ve recently purchased a 2003 td5 110 van but the headlights aren’t working. I can flash them but neither dipped beam or full beam (without holding flash) works. I have replaced the light on off switch and the indicator stalk switch and the salmon pink dim dip relay however this hasn’t fixed the problem.

Has anyone else had the same problem and fixed it? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Normally it is the switches burning out.

Have you checked the fuses? Charlie

Yes I’ve checked all the fuses and replaced both switches.

I was on halogen and then I changed to leds but had the same problem with both.

2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 DCPU Stornoway Grey

I'm not especially familiar with the TD5 wiring but assuming that it is generally similar to the early Puma, there is likely to be an ignition-energised relay which prevents the headlights from being on without the ignition. If this has failed, it would produce the symptoms you describe.

Ok. Begin with the simple things. Get yourself a multimeter to test that 12v is getting to the switches and headlights. It could be a dodgy connection somewhere, corroded fuse connection or something.

This is your best way forward.

2006 Defender 110 Td5 USW Zermatt Silver

Short out / bridge the dim dip relay.

Also make sure the wiring connections and the new light switch are good. New parts aren’t always good parts.
