90 110 towing comparison
Hi all,

Finally looking at taking the leap to the new defender. Would be commercial spec.

Just wondering how good the towing ability is with the 90 compared to the 110?

Is it different league to the old 90 & 110’s? I hate towing the old 90 so would always pick the 110.
Also, I note that the commercial 90 is on coils. Any good or can they be upgraded to air? That is of course if the 90 is more than capable than the old 110.

Sorry can’t help on the towing but you can get a Hard Top on air.

Have a look at Harry’s Garage you tube channel, he had one on coils towing a car transporter. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

I have a 110 P300 on coils. Tows really well. My trailers are load balanced well so I don't carry a lot of tongue weight which helps a lot.
My GL450 has air and is also a great tow vehicle.

I've only ridden in a 90 that was towing and it was a little choppy, but not concerning. That one was on air.

Can't speak for the new Defender but I went from towing in a TD5 110 to a TDV8 L322 more often than not it was my wifes horse trailer with three ponies and tack so it was about 3.2 tonnes loaded.

There's only two things I prefered the Range Rover for, firstly the automatic gearbox and secondly the power.

I sold the Range Rover when we retired the horses but given a starting point again I'd probably have an old Defender 110 with an M57.

I just hated the mass of the Range Rover and air suspension for any kind of twisty road, in contrast my TD5 110 with new standard springs and Bilsteins was a joy.

l went from towing our caravan with a Defender TD5 110 to a new Defender 90 D250.

Both vehicles tow very well, they're made for it.
But the new Defender has so much power from the 3.0 D250, it's in a different league. Hills don't make any difference at all and it will sit at the legal limit up hill and down dale.
The automatic transmission gets on with the job without any issues, smooth as anything.
MPG towing the 'van is around 25.

The new Defender 90 is a little bouncy at times when towing due to the short wheelbase but it's not an issue. I imagine the 110 would be better in this respect.

My old TD5 Defender was fine, but the suspension was quite hard and you could hear the caravan banging on the towball at times.

My new Defender is a Commercial version on coils. Not sure how the air suspension would get on, possibly smoother.

However the rear of the vehicle doesn't drop noticeably even when loaded up with my outboard motor and boat in the back plus the caravan on the tow bar.

But you won't be disappointed with the new Defender as a tow vehicle whichever version you get.

Thank you all.

I’ve seen the Harry’s garage video. I would be buying commercial for my company and wondered if the coils could be converted to air. Am I right in thinking that the new 90 has the wheelbase of the old 110?
