Transmission reset

How do you perform a transmission adaptation reset on the Defender. Can you do it with the GAP tool?

l am sure l read it somewhere but have done a search and can't find the information.

I remembered this from my Discovery Sport days, it resets the gearbox "learning" to factory settings if that's what you're after.

1) Press Start button but don't turn on the engine.
2) Press the Accelerator down to the floor for about 15 seconds.
3) Hit the start button again to turn off the power.
4) Remove foot from Accelerator
5) Wait for 2 Mins.
6) Start the engine and Drive.

I imagine this works on any JLR ZF box.

PS. I haven't tried this.

I'm pretty sure that is the procedure for the Jags with the ZF 8 speed so as you say it would probably work on most ZF boxes, the question is why would you want to reset it? If there's a problem get it into a dealer and let them have a look at it.

May I ask why you need to reset the transmission? Curious is all.

and once you've reset it.. how do you train it not to do that massive jerky jump when slowing into first then accelerating again..!?

Eg, engine braking towards red traffic lights which then turn green..

l was looking on the BMW forum and owners said that a transmission reset often improved the general operation on their vehicles (ZF 8 speed)

Mine is okay but occasionally performs a clumsy gear change or a bit of a lurch when slowing down at low speed and then applying power.

lt looks like the transmission disengages on the over run and then engine RPM shoot up and the transmission suddenly re engages.

At the end of the day it is up to you what you do with your car but I would suggest a bit more reading as a lot of BMW forums suggest that it is a waste of time resetting the gearbox unless you have just replaced the filter and fluid, also just because they both have the ZF 8 Speed installed that doesn't mean they work in the same way. ZF work with manufacturers to design how the gearbox will work in the vehicle that it is intended for, so although they are the 'same' gearbox they could work in totally different ways so what's good for a BMW may not be good for a JLR.

Yes Lightening, you can do a reset with the GAP tool. I performed this after my recent transmission oil & filter change.

I’ve not got the GAP with me to confirm, but I recall it to be under Service/Test >> TCM >> Clear Adaptation Values.

I would have thought that doing a "factory reset" would just prompt the gearbox to begin learning your driving style all over again, not sure if that would cure the above. Current vehicle: 2020 Defender 110S

ls the "learning" process continuous? Only when l first got the vehicle l drove it very carefully but now after a few thousand miles l am using more of the performance.

lf the transmission continually learns and adapts it would (as suggested above) be pointless resetting it.
