How common is it for a fuel pump to fail? I have a 2000 Defender 110 TD5>

If it's still on the original pump I'd say you've done very well.
If/when you replace it make sure to use a genuine one.. 04' 90 Td5 CSW.. |

As above, ONLY use a genuine LR or VDO/Continental (made in Germany) pump, not a pattern one or you'll be doing it all again before too long.
Don't be tempted by the "OEM" Lucas pumps, they are pattern ones. 20+ years is good going for a Td5 pump. I've just changed mine after 21.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Yep don’t cheap out on the pumps you’ll be doing it again. 110 is easier to drop a tank out of than a 90 lucky for you.

Hack?? How dare you...  I will have you know the fuel pump hatch mod was surgical in its precision...
It is actually a great mod for the reason above and for the fact that this way around there is no chance of breaking the fuel pipe unions that hate to be flexed during the dropping of the fuel tank. |

Oh yeah loving my inspection hatch. Previous Owner put it in for me. He also swapped the hoses around on the new cheap pump he fitted which I thought was faulty and replaced with VDO only then to make me look at the hoses finding crimp fittings and subsequent leaks. Open did the hatch go again for me to swap out the whole fuel pipe "harness" with a known good. Finally all good!.

 Oh no mixing up the connections would have created quite the issue
Goodness VDO or nothing when it comes to the fuel pump or the MAF sensor. Everything else and you are just chucking money at the wind. |

Can second the need to go for genuine pump only and also closely inspecet all pipes and unions and replace where neccasary. I had to do mine as it was a noisy pump and had no end of starting issues - turned out the guy before (#1stclassbodger) had not only installed the fittings the wrong way round but the fueld was getting to the engine ciompletely the wrong way round - i.e. into the cooler and back into the engine coming back down to the tank through the regulator.....

I considered making a hatch in the floor when I replace the floor in my doublecab, I just couldn't bring myself to hack one of the floor braces...

Hi All
I received my new pump and was ready to install when I discovered it was a different set up that what is currently in the vehicle. Photo on the left is the one I received from LR Direct claiming it is an original Land Rover part and suitable for up to a 2016 TD5. As you can see the connections are different. HAs there been any updates to this set up? The new one only has a supply and return connection and no LP return. |

From the photos in your gallery you have been sent a 2.4 Puma (also 99-06 ROW spec 300 Tdi) sender.
What part number you order? LRDirect is all part number based rather than a description or category. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

dont buy cheap for god sake, the previous owner who had mine, had it replaced. It went on me sadly, looks like it was replaced with a cheap unit for it to go on me.
Dropping the tank isnt as a nightmare, but then again me and my dad have tackled far worse together. The only pain in the arses were, getting the fuel pump locking ring back on, getting the seals to sit etc. Then the battle was getting the tank back up, but that was due to the fact it was a full unit, which we ended up draining it out. Once that was done, we had it back up there with a little care and time.  Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

A bit of an old thread, but it is worth saying VDO or nothing when it comes to TD5 fuel pumps. Expensive, yes, but the chances of getting a noisy or bad one are much lower and worth the price.
