Steering damper
Want to change this back to an original damper. IS it just a straight swap? i.e. Unbolt existing one, bolt in new one?

Sorry, not answering your question. But I was considering swapping my standard damper for the one you’re taking off. Hoping it might settle it on the motorway?

What are you reasons for changing?

Yes straight swap back.

If you are fitting one to improve things then you have issues that you are trying to cover up.

No, it drives absolutely fine but it's just undergone a big restoration to a heritage look and I don't feel this looks right so wanted something standard looking.
Is there a noticeable difference between a standard damper and one like this?

Sounds like you might have something worn/broken or not right. A Defender should be perfectly stable at motorway speeds.

I really meant a slightly firmer feel to the steering, more centred rather than stable.

But changing some bushes next week anyway!

Just a personal point of view.

I tried that type of dampener and ended up taking it back off. The reason was that the spring kept unwinding from the block then the steering was being pushed over to one side.

I would reset the spring, only for it to do the same when I was driving.

If you look at the picture, that spring is held in place by a jubilee clip, so I suspect they had the same problem as I.

I am currently using an Old Man Emu dampener, fit and forget.

It could be worn bushes. But do remember a Land Rover has a steering box, the axles are isolated from the chassis via 4 rubber bushes and the tyres are high profile. The steering will feel different to a car or even a modern unibody Land Rover with rack & pinion steering.

I had same problem as Mark b
At first it was fine but then the spring started slipping

Created a bit of a wobble at speed. Changed the usual but still doing it until I put a heavy duty damper on.

All good now.

My 110 has a Salisbury front axel so is all heavy duty.

If I was you I’d change it to look more original, nice job on the truck.

I think replacement with an OEM makes sense - they are perfectly adequate.

A question for Mark B. How does the OME damper help, when compared to the standard one. Mines fine, but I'm not sure exactly what they're ( upgraded types ) supposed to do, apart from mask other problems. Thanks.
